quick comparison http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/boa/4501404430.html but not knowing the history of a boat hurts if you know the owner its easyer to judge the type of guy he is, does he do his own work , is he the type of guy who runs it hard and puts it away wet
judge the boat by the owner if he has had it a long time also friend or not do a survey

I have an 89 292. I can tell you they are excellent boats. With the 385's I would say you should see around 66-67 mph with a set of Mirage props and a clean bottom. My boat has 420's in it and I see 68 mph with Bravo props. As to your bottom paint, I had a 242 formula with bottom paint. The paint was thick and it terrible shape. I gained 8 mph when it was removed and I tried everything to get the paint off. The stripper that I used that worked the best including interlux and pewit products was Behr deck stripper. I think it's the only product Behr makes thats any good.
So go to Home Depot buy a jug to test it out and see if it works on your paint. Get a good power washer with 2800-3000 psi and with a flow of around 5 GPM. The flow is more important than the pressure! Then put a rototip nozzle on it, and go to town. I let it the stripper set on the paint for a good 30 minutes, and I would mist it with water after 15 minutes. This method should have your hull looking good with minimal work.
Now yes you can sand your bottom, but its going to take a lot of work. You are not going to sand bottom paint off with 400 or 600 grit paper. So that means you are going to scratch you gel coat up and then need to come back and sand out all of the scratches. Depending on how much paint is left on the bottom, this could easily turn into a 100 plus hour job going this way.
The best way to tackle this, would be to have a someone soda blast the bottom. The bottom will be perfect when done, and it won't hurt anything. Either way, good luck with the 292 and enjoy it.

My father has an 89 292 with big power Blower motors. after market steering 87+ mph handles great, motors drives everything was built by joe griffen. I think you will love the way the 292 handles the water. Iv been looking for one myself.
