iPad used for navigation.

What apps are you guys using? I have been messing around with the free navionics. It leaves a lot to desired. I'm thinking the upgrade would be what I'm looking of but for $50 I want to be sure. Simple maps for $10 is an option new. Just looking to input and reviews on what you guys are using. I'm going to be running mine threw an iPad mini. Using the garmin GLO for location service.

Bought the Navionics app for my iPhone then installed it on my iPad. Cheaper. Not sure if any difference but seems pretty good

HyFive578 06-23-2014 01:25 PM

I use Navionics with upgrade. Works pretty well.

Chris 06-23-2014 01:34 PM

I am using navionics on my iphone as well - seems to work great except for the glare!
what is everyone doing to prevent the glare on the iphone???

92nsx 06-23-2014 02:24 PM

Navionics for my WiFi Tab 2 , 10.1

4bus 06-23-2014 02:44 PM

I use Navionics USA/Canada paid on my Waterproof Pantech Element Tablet with wifi and 3G. Works great and the glare is not as bad as an Ipad or even my phone during the day. I use this mount to my fiberglass near the dash, amazing mount http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That's cool... I use a RAM Mount (double suction cup). That thing will stick to anything and not come off...

csturben 06-23-2014 03:46 PM

I use the navionics upgrade as well on my iPhone and ipad. I have used it for years and it works well plus it has the ability to add user generated data.

US1 Fountain 06-23-2014 04:07 PM

Anyone know what the difference is between the iPhone vs iPad versions? From what I can gather is resolution is higher on the iPad version. Otherwise same thing

csturben 06-23-2014 10:25 PM

They look the same with the same features on both. I like the view on my ipad simply because it's bigger and you can see more of an given area. I first downloaded it for the iPhone and was pleasantly surprised when I could have it on my ipad without having to purchase it again.

mptrimshop 06-23-2014 11:14 PM

Is the one ya pay $50 a lot better than the free one.... Cuz I don't really like the free app. It works but not to many features !

mptrimshop 06-24-2014 04:28 AM

Anyone use INavX ?

ICDEDPPL 06-24-2014 08:38 AM

I never had the free one but the $50 one has everything Ive ever needed.

wieland77 06-25-2014 08:34 AM

For the USA and Canada map app its only 9.99, you might be looking at the "HD MAP" which I dont think is worth the extra $$. Downloand the $10 regualr app and it does everything you need.

Wildman_grafix 11-11-2015 07:37 PM

Bring back a old thread, I have a I Pad air, what kind of mounts are you guys using?

mptrimshop 11-11-2015 10:26 PM

I honestly have up on unsung mine..... You just can't see it in the sun.... Sucks cuz it's so close to working well.

MrCIG 11-11-2015 10:54 PM

Super sucker works great

WHIPLASH 11-12-2015 09:14 AM

Paid bonuses?

I also used the free one but didn't have what I wanted. Does the paid version have things like speed, course, ete, eta distance, etc. that you can have on the screen like a dedicated (ex. Garmin) marine gps?

What model did you get? Does it stay on in rough water? Can you post a pic? Thanks

Bawana 11-12-2015 11:49 AM

Never mind HyFive I went to their site and ordered the locking case holder and mounts. Nice stuff.

Flightplan 11-12-2015 11:57 AM

How do you guys keep your screens from getting hot and blacking out in the summer?

Bawana 11-12-2015 12:08 PM

ah yes very good question, I have noticed that if my Ipad gets hot it doesn't like it at all. I always put mine in the cabin in the past, but now just purchased a mounting system. I am thinking when I am docked somewhere I will have to put a beach towel over it on sunny days. I will also try to mount it under my race faring when I run, and try to keep it out of the sun.

donzi matt 11-29-2015 07:42 PM

I was recently given an iPad mini with cell service and GPS. I know my home lake very well so I don't need it often, but would like to use this as a chartplotter when I do poker runs or visit other areas. What app seems to be best? Looks like Navionics and Garmin Bluechart are the two front runners. I know they can be tough to see in direct sunlight, but this seems like a pretty economical option for the amount of time I am going to use it.

Wildman_grafix 01-11-2016 10:31 AM

Has anyone tried one of these cases with the anti glare? Does it help?

http://www.amazon.com/Navitech-Heavy...2%3A2661619011

Bawana 01-11-2016 02:25 PM

I have that case, I love it. You can, and I have, have it drop from about 7 feet and didn't break. The anti glare is ok but if its in the sun it still gets hot & will shut down. But as for saving your Ipad from drops, it works very well.

Wildman_grafix 01-11-2016 02:44 PM

Bawana,

Before it gets hot and shuts down can you see the charts good enough to use on the boat? The heat will be a issue here no matter what but I may be able to use it for a couple of months before it gets real hot.

I'll break down and have to buy a real chart plotter then.

Bawana 01-11-2016 07:11 PM

If the sun is directly on the screen you still can't see. But its still better then my chart plotter.

Wildman_grafix 01-11-2016 09:06 PM

Good enough for me, just ordered one from Amazon.

Thanks.

Here's Johnny 01-12-2016 05:35 AM

I used my iPhone the last two seasons with the Garmin app.... I have to admit I like it better then my Garmim 640 gps unit.... worked better in sun light and at night..... app has all I need. I tried using my iPad but it was a WiFi only version so had no gps capability. I just bought the new iPad Pro with cellular capability..... looking for the best mount now so I can use that when I go to new places.... just need to find the right place to mount it..... I honestly think, for the boating I do, the iPad/iPhone work the best for me....... My 640 will be my back up gps..... in spring I'll also be adding usb ports to a few areas of my boat...... everything seems to need charging these days.......

Wildman_grafix 01-12-2016 06:14 AM

I am going to order this one.

Just removed the old Garmin GPS and Foruno Chartplotter. Both wore out. Rather than invest 3-4 figures in some cray in-built Chartplotter, I had a composite plate made and installed a surface mount for my waterproof iPad case. Now the iPad sits securely on my dash with updated charts.

Using Nqavionics. More than I'll ever need.

plus, if I want to go for offshore, I can get a battery-powered Bluetooth antenna.

LaughingCat 01-12-2016 11:50 AM

I used the RAM mount. Very strong, but the iPad moved around more than I wanted. Surface mount is great.

mptrimshop 01-12-2016 04:15 PM

How do you see the thing in the daylight ?

JohnRork 02-05-2016 08:21 AM

I'm interested in this as well. I have the Navi app on my Iphone and it works good but you can't hardly see it during the day

LaughingCat 02-05-2016 12:17 PM

Angle of dash keeps this from being a problem, unless early in morning or late in afternoon and position of boat.

LaughingCat 02-05-2016 12:18 PM

But I also have overhead arch with electronics box and, sometimes, a black Bimini attached to arch so sun is not an issue.
