rc boats

i am thinking about bying a rc boat,i like the cats.anybody got a recomendation on what to buy.i pretty much want an electric ready to run boat.

low_psi 07-13-2014 11:14 AM

Proboat if going electric. Make sure you go brushless, good batteries and a good charger are probably the most important things.... I race RC in the winter.

Check Gino's trash can :)

I really want the Traxxes Spartan! That things a beast. I had a Miss Budweiser hydro years back and that was fun. Towerhobbies.com was always the biggest name in RC stuff but also check locally for a hobby shop. May be able to beat online prices?

Sydwayz 07-13-2014 01:01 PM

I have a Traxxas Spartan. It's pretty fun, but the batteries are stupid expensive. $75 minumum for the Li-Pos, and if you flip it, and one flies out, that REALLY sucks.
Ask me how I know that.

4mulafastech 07-13-2014 01:10 PM

Check out the Aquacraft Revolt 30. Great performing brushless 30" V-hull. I got one last year and began tuning by playing with the CG, strut height and experimenting with props. Got a prop balancer and mini belt sander for sharpening. Currently running 45+ mph and it handles great and responds to changes just like a full size boat. I run 4S lipo batteries. Search Revolt 30 on YouTube. Some guys have upgraded to 6S and they run on the edge of any control at 65+ mph! Good luck, these electric boats are addicting.

hickle44 07-13-2014 01:37 PM

hobbyking.get ur lipo batteries from them.i have run them for years they are way cheaper than the name brands and work well.i notice no difference from the expensive ones.i have tried both.turnigy brand.

Pro Boats are good. Bought two last summer while at Lake Norman. The Gieco version is fast and very controllable. I also got the Red HP version that runs the hotter battery pack. Very fast and easy to flip. Be prepared to go swimming. I used extra velcro on the battery packs to move the weight forward for balance and also make sure you tape the lid on. It seals the boat as well keep it from coming off if the latch breaks.

I have the venom fountain king of shave. Fast, stable and a blast to drive. Get a really good 3 cell 5500mha lipo with a hard shell.

Pretty Cool Vid of the spartan

Ok these are the coolest things I have seen! Might have to build a "Mini Me" boat! :

Does anyone make a large scale MTI?

MILD THUNDER 07-13-2014 06:32 PM

Mike, I have the Spartan. So does Tall Keith. I consider it more of a entry level boat. We ran them on the 6s lipo's for a while. My motor and esc took a $hit last fall. Keiths motor took a $hit last weekend. The hulls are cheap plastic. Biggest complaint with the Spartan, is while yes its capable of going fast with lipo's, it handles like a 24ft Checkmate with a 1200HP engine.

I think you would like the Venom King of Shaves brushless Cat to start with. Fiberglass hull, just a better boat for comparable cost.

http://rcboatsonly.com/VENOM-KING-OF...C-RC-BOAT.html

For Lipo's, we been using the "Gens Ace" brand with good luck. Much cheaper than some of the other batteries with better specs. My cousin races RC cars all over the midwest, he said lots of racers use them with good luck. You can buy them here.

http://www.hobbypartz.com/gens.html

I look around the house Mike. I might have a couple extra Lipo Chargers I can give you. I bought a new Traxxas Lipo charger last year, but have a couple others. I been contemplating fixing my spartan. Was gonna upgrade to a leopard motor, and better ESC, but not sure I wanna invest the money in that boat. Im almost kinda wanting a big 50-60'' Gas boat to try.

MILD THUNDER 07-13-2014 06:44 PM

I'd like to get one of these. This thing planes off like my Fountain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP-HTa6SFdg

I agree with above, the Venom king of shaves is a nice piece. handles like its on rails and runs out pretty good. fun boat

It's just like a REAL Apache, lots of noise, racket, and attention at the dock; and can hardly get on plane. :D :drink: (just kidding tribe members)

LubeJobs42 07-13-2014 08:36 PM

I love the little number 8's!!!

I think I may order one of these. I will just need to practice my driving before it gets here!

Typical Apache. All noise, no go, built to run on teeny tiny ponds..…

Now that I know I can run one of the cats on snow, I'm putting one on my Christmas list. At least I'll have one boat I can use all year here.

Actually there is a website in China where you can get really good batteries dirt cheap. They are all I run in my race vehicles. hobbyking.com. Shipping is a bit slow, but cheap and good. I actually use their Speed Controls now as well. Turns out they are basically one of the manufactures that get "rebranded" by other companies then get a 50% mark up..... If anyone wants suggestions on which of their batteries to get let me know. I can/will take a look at the models I run in my trucks. (I put all that stuff away until the full scale toys are winterized)...

hence the reason I race them in the fall/winter (buggies & short course trucks)...

low_psi 07-14-2014 08:36 AM

Also if steering away from a RTR 9ready to run) one other area I would suggest spending a decent amount of coin is the radio. Buy a good quality radio with multi model memory. he cheaper radios simply don't have the adjustments, plus. I personally use Spektrum radios (right now the DX3R Pro). Futaba, Spektrum, Airtronics, Radio Post are a few of the better brands. I would steer clear of the "Fly Sky" brand (imported China). We have nothing but problems with those at the local tracks. They seem to bleed signal and interfere with some of the other radios, primarily the Spektrum DSM radios.

I recently picked up a joysway US-1 Cat off craigslist. Brushless electric running two 3s lipo's. Had it with me on the boat this weekend, and my father and I had a blast running it. Amazing how quick it is and how easy it is barrel roll it. I forsee this being another expensive hobby for me LOL.

I have a Spartan with the 6S LiPos and it hauls aZZ.. let me see if I can post a video in a few minutes but got this last winter and need to get to working on it soon. Probably going with a quickdraw engine package but not 100% yet. It is a 64" Expresscraft carbon fiber hull and is pretty cool but needs some finishing.

I run the Turnigy in my Spartan that I got from hobbyking. Good batteries at a lower cost.

I've run the Turnigy LiPo's, chargers, ESC's, and Servo's when I was in to RC Heli's a few years ago. They are a fraction of the cost and performed well.

I did the RC boat thing 15 /20 years ago. I was running all nitro boats back then as electrics was just coming in. Had a 36" Miss Atlas Van lines Hydro with a .40, a Dumas 48" Scarab S Type with twin .67 outboards, an Aeromarine Popeyes 50" cat with twin .67 inboards and an Aeromarine Miss Budweiser Hydro.I enjoyed the building more than the running but to this day I swear it is cheaper to run my Dominator. Got to admit, I would like to try one of the electrics some day.

While researching my 402 I found that back in the 80's International hobbies made an exact 1/9th scale rc 402 sr1. Needless to say had to find one found a bare hull then the outdrives and .67 nitro engines. rcuniverse.com has some great forums on nitro and electric boats and the people on the forums are great.

id like to thank everybody for all the input,i am going to go to a local hobby shop and take a look at what they have and try to educate myself before i buy one.
