What happened to the quad diesel OuterLimits?

Remember the big OL with diesels that started the around LI race and blew the gear boxes? It got repaired (maybe) and went to i think Europe and I thought it would have raced in the Venture Cup perhaps? Just wondering what became of it?

That's Dean Gibbs' boat. In the UK I believe.
He won the CTC race last year with his Fountain.
Mike Bontoft prepared it for the LI race.

I thought it was on the other side of the pond but why has it not been racing still gear box issues?

what's wrong with it that it is back, I saw the gear boxes after the first problem are they still an issue?

Bostonirish 07-20-2014 05:38 PM

The buisness end of that quad diesel boat is pretty intense looking. 4 surface drives is no joke

Nothing, it's all together and ready to run. It ran last summer. It's always been in the states.

I'm sorry I thought it was over in the UK, that was story, it was going there. Do they have any plans for it or it's just sitting?

boostbros 07-20-2014 08:27 PM

lets see a pic of the 4 arnsons and what kind of rotation are the drives? kinda currious the 4 of a kind boat had the engines higher in back but not enough freeboard i was there when they sank it!

Boat has plenty of freeboard, goosing the engines in reverse with big wheels, hatches up, and against current was the real problem. That is not the only boat to ever sink in that river, and it wont be the last.

I looked for my pics, as I was in the OL shop when that boat was being built with Fiat diesels. Whood a thunk? It was very slick rig. Anyway, cant seem to find the pics. I think they were on the previous computer that got wiped during Hurricane Sandy.

pstorti 07-21-2014 03:08 PM

there is a video on youtube of it also I found by accident one day looking for info on the FPT diesels

The mooring is NOT better, with crashboxes, 35" props and 0.8 overdrive...

pstorti 05-09-2016 02:20 PM

Wow what is idle speed 12-15 mph? Could you change for 1:1 transmissions and 40" props? I wonder why they went with cashboxes those motors aren't so powerful that a transmission couldn't handle them. What was the setup on the old boat? I know it had the same engines.

iliveonanisland 05-10-2016 03:53 AM

Why did you go with the fiat diesels instead of say cummins? Size? Weight. Rpm? Thx, bad mofo...rm

I believe they were already in the boat when he bought it. While they are both good engines Cummins has done a horrible job with the packaging of the engines and they are much wider than the FPT. Just lazy engineering on Cummins' part.

Need the 11" dropboxes to get propshafts in right places. SCS crashbox/dropbox is a nice compact unit. Same setup from day one.
Idle speed not so bad when running one or two engines - 7-8 mph.
