42 MTI "Wicked" Questions
1 Attachment(s)
http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o58054-en.html
I've been contemplating what to buy with some extra fun money. Aventador or boat is on the short list. Plan would be to do 3 of the big poker runs a year and maybe a 1/2 dozen times out on Lake Erie during the summer. I've emailed the seller but no response so far and before I bother Pier 57, MTI, or TNT I'd like to see if its something I am going to buy. Questions are... 1.) Has it been raced? 2.) Has it been wrecked? 3.) Coming from a 46 cig to a 42 MTI will I be happy? 4.) How hot in a closed canopy with the entry lids removed? 5.) What are the thoughts of putting Merc 700's in and eventualy repower with Merc 1100's as experience grows? 6.) With 1.29 gear ratio and other setup would 700 a side work? 7.) What props with 700 power? Thanks for any insights and responses. |

Don't you know that a 41 Apache is the best boat ever, passed down from God to Noah and then on to Ben and Bobby! :evilb: In all seriousness, I suspect the 700's will be underpowered since they use those in the 36/39/40 and the performance is ok, not record setting. Unless you bumped the 700s up (whipple upgrades) then you will probably need 850s+ to make the boat exciting. It is a sharp boat for sure. If you are looking for someone else's upgraded project look at this MTI w/1100s- http://lipship.com/used_boats/view/64 |
I don't know anything about that particular boat, but a full canopy "pleasure" boat is a miserable PITA. They're hot, hard to get in and out of, and you can't see chit out of them. And with a tunnel tab on a "pleasure" boat, keep the oxygen tank full and harnesses on. If the indicators malfunction or you just forget that it's down, you'll end up on your lid.

1- yes
2- yes 3- yes 4- it's fine, this one has AC - but I used to run around w the tops off of speedy and it was fine 5- prob 130 w 700s and right gears and props 6- no idea 7- no idea I almost bought this boat, it's an awesome machine |

My understanding with 700's its certainly not blowing over. The concern would be any kind of turn with the tunnel packed with air. Is this your logic? Thanks for your input. |

Def go bigger than 700's. Been in several 40's w 700's and they all became boring real quick. My boat was planned for 700's as well and I'm so glad I went with the 1100 package.

Probably the funniest post by far |
You could blow that boat over with 496s in it if you didn't know what you are doing. And Bubba is right on target with the tunnel tab comments.
All of that is manageable, but this boat compared to your Cigarette is a BIG difference. For a boat of that caliber, you really need a "team" to run it. No rub rail, which means you need (proficient) help at the docks. You can't just trust any bloke with moving your truck/trailer in the parking lot either. Just be aware that you are NOT "easing" back into the sport if you go with this option. A good friend wanted to go MTI or similar. He has an F-650, and means to do it. But he just moved up to a faster V-bottom for simplicity of pleasure boating at the drop of a hat. |
What race boat was it ?
|
Bacardi silver
|
Buy the Avendor and bum rides in friends boats! You don't want a canopy boat ac or not. My .02 cents.
|
So I made what I feel is a fair offer, cash deal, and I'd close and pick up boat Monday. He declined.
At 250k + engines + trans + props + exhaust + rigging = to much compared to the other 40 running boats that can be bought. Plan was TNT for rigging and key west poker run in three months. |

I was told that I would not like the canopy and that in a very short time 700s would be boring.
|
I'll take boring 700s any day. Zip tie them to the dash and roll to KW and STILL arrive before the 'big power" guys have theirs repaired 3x before they arrive after dark. :party-smiley-004:

That is an extremely cool piece…… Elmer hasn't had it long, and he put some time and effort into it….
The boat is a weapon, not a bar cruiser or sandbar boat. 700s….not for me. Wild had a 40 with some 2.0l Volkswagens or something of the like for awhile..He still had fun and didn't have issues or big bills along the way… But, ride in a 1075,1100, or 1350 boat and you'll never consider 700s. That boat could get on the water with decent power easily. Merc would be the first choice, but you could go old school if you are trying to keep the expenses down. Cobra or Chief could do some 850s pretty reasonably. Yes, as bubba said, take that tunnel tab off and leave it in the garage. You have no need for that. To me, the lack of visibility out of the boat is the biggest issue. If you'd rather have an open cockpit MTI, call me. Running a big cat is a different program than that 46 Cig was. Honestly, the cat is easier to drive, runs better, and is obviously much faster…. |
Tim is right on all of the above. Best thing that happened to you was the owner declined the offer! Lol

Buy something with the new Merc 1100s with and 6 place open cockpit and you will be happy for years to come. I came from a 32' Crownline with a top speed of 58mph to a 40 Skater with 1100 blower motors. Just be smart and take your time and have experienced people teach you. With the 1100s you get a reliable, fun, and safe package. I don't know your budget, but doing some math you will be so much more money ahead buying an open cockpit boat with Merc power. I was fortunate enough to run in SummerOs new MTI with Randy S, and Scott from CPR. We some interesting discussions about the 1100s and 1350s. Those motors scared me away initially because of the potential cost to rebuild. However, both pointed out that 1) you are going to get almost double the hours between rebuilds and 2) once you rebuild them they come with a year warranty. Putting it in perspective, it's almost a wash financially AND you get a 1 year warranty. |

If it hasn't been mentioned, check on insurance availability for yourself before picking a boat/power package. That can be the determining factor sometimes, unfortunately.
|
Jeremy had that 46 Cig AMII for a few years.. Its a 100+ mph boat….
I have no doubt that you'll have no trouble handling a cat safely… Running that cig at big speeds takes a lot more effort and nerve than the cat at even 150… Your insurance man will likely require you to take a safety course with Brad or Tres, which certainly isn't a bad thing for anyone. The LOTO shootout is coming up in a couple weeks.. Come on out Jeremy.. It's a great place to size up your options. |

Elmer is a good friend of mine.... the boat he has is well known as the ex Bacardi Silver and now Wicked..... if you are worried about a canopy or 700's not being enough or being in over your head money wise.... it's not the boat for you...someone who wants that boat is a specific buyer just like an Apache buyer.... there are 18 different views on the worth of a piece of equipment it comes down to how bad you want that boat.... I don't know off the top of my head of a boat that has been gone through and is as in mint shape as Wicked....on the other hand here is a great deal http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o57533-en.html and you are boating tomorrow ........ but what do I know all I have is a canoe :P

Jeremy (BraceYourSelf) has spent hundreds of thousands on offshore boats, pretty sure he made a few calls before reaching out to Elmer on the boat. He got buried in the last boat (Cig 46) so I'm pretty sure he knows what things cost and what these are worth on the used market regardless of how shiny the paint is! :D |
Jeremy, fun factor is very important. We are still out EVERY weekend.

I know the boat and all it needs is motors and trans |
My guess is none of you guys are going to buy it or have the means to
Just a guess |
I did make calls on the boat. I would of paid 200K for the hull. I had no trade, cash deal, and pick it up this week. I figured I'd have 350K into it. My concerns were that it was a canopy, ex race boat that was rolled, and sixes that lived behind some big power. At the end of the day I was going to give it a whirl. The problem is the right buyer for wicked is beyond a slim market, but what do I know. I think the boat unrigged will not sell for more then 200K and rigged with fresh everything will struggle to bring 300K and when I was ready to sell I'd of dumped it for 200K max if I was lucky.
|
I was thinkig new exhaust and propped correctly.
|
Your prob pretty close with your numbers. I will say that near everything exhaust included
Is fresh. That's how I sold it and Elmer has only made it better ( trailer) But. Your right. It takes the right buyer for a canopy pleasure boat. Had I to do it over, I might have kept it and converted it to a pleasure 4 or 5 place. No lid |
