Dear lord that quatar boat has some power. I didn't realize anyone had out turbines so nutty in a boat.

That's what happenes when you can buy nice new airworthy stuff. Just the gear reduction boxes for that setup are $100k each.. If you can find them. I figure by the time you buy the engines, install them, and get the power to the water, your probably between $500,000.00 and $750,000.00 EACH SIDE.

Amazing hardware, Pics?

In a boat that small, unless you are staying very close you will want to come early and leave very late and take it easy. It will be very, very rough when everyone leaves.

will the record be beat?anything can happen so we shall see!i will be there from the 15th through the25th.i hope to meet some of the oso brothers .i will be in my fountain.

We plan on taking it very easy. It was the biggest boat I could rent and not give my first born for. I do plan on doing both of what you said though. I recall last year how rough it got and also heard stories, so we will be making sure we take it slow and steady.

I am use to big waves from over here as I only boat in the gulf but the waves from all angles will be different.

The 10' holes are what will sneak up on you and get you. You'll be like, "Where did all the f@cking water go?!"

In 2006 on Sunday, we had a blast running the post-Shootout slop in the first Sunny F-4. This was back in the Shooter's 21 days.

10' hole and our 25' boat......joy lol

drpete3 08-14-2014 12:33 PM

I read about the new power this am. Wow I hope all the testing goes great and they get it "running". Has anyone ever run this much HP in a mystic ever?

tbirdusa 08-14-2014 01:58 PM

What was powering the Bud hydroplane boat back in 06 or 07 at Shooters when he went topgun? That was a single engine boat upwards of 180?
I don't think Qatar would be coming if they didn't feel they had a good shot at the record.

Safe travels to all heading that way next week.

CrownHawg 08-14-2014 02:10 PM

It's not the "normal" boat wakes that will get you. It's those 3-4 50+ ft cruisers side by side heading up the channel pushing several thousand acre/ft of water that are killers! I saw several "<24ft boats" last year that literally disappeared in those holes! I was looking back at a small tri-hull and shouted "Hey! Where'd that boat go? Oh, there it is, nope, it's gone again." Crazy!

Smitty 08-14-2014 04:37 PM

I'm in a 36 footer and last year on our way home, I came up behind a 50+ foot cruiser, backed down a bit and got awesome air with a perfect landing. Then I got back on the sticks thinking I was in the clear. Ooops....forgot about the 6-8 ft frontal wave. Hit that thing, chopped the sticks and dropped straight down into a huge hole. No lie, I thought we were going to sink from a cracked hull we hit so hard !!! Lesson learned and shared :)

TYPHOON 08-14-2014 05:04 PM

Does anyone know the top speed the Qatar boat has run on a longer test run and not a short mile course? What do you all think the top speed could be with all that extra HP on a long run with no restrictions? Can someone do the math on HP to weight? That's not a little more power than the T55 THATS A $HIT LOAD MORE. Is 300 MPH possible?

It is a T55....

LOTO waves have cracked many boats!! It's not open ocean or lake Michigan, but until you have experienced it, especially after the shootout, you want to be careful.

They figured my way could do 240+. With all the extra power this boat has I suspect 250+ is theoretically possible. But damn, saying it and doing it are far different things. Serious cajones required.

Would phenomenon have a shot?

speicher lane 08-15-2014 05:09 AM

Having dramatic HP advantage over MY WAY isn't a guaranteed record setter unless they can put all that power to the water and have the driveline / props hold up.. it is after all a 50' cat on a liquid dragway. How much trial and error testing must Tomlison's crew have goine through to go from 208 to the 224?

That said I would like to see 224 fall just as a natural progression of people pushing the evolutionary envelope of man vs. machine.... providing everyone goes home at night safe and sound.

There is another Mystic that I would like to see make a pass or twol... pistons are cranking out some crazy HP since Dave/JT ran their 208 pass

boostbros 08-15-2014 08:31 AM

ok whos going to borrow a top fuel hydro..... idle to about half track then bang it thru the top end trap? i think there up to 275 now in the liquid quarter! 10,000 hp in a 18 foot boat ought to git er done! and i,d pay to see it! now thats a thunderboat.....i,m all for pistons on the water and turbines in the air photographing the event.

Doesn't qualify, you will need a 21 footer to run. Plus I don't know if a top fuel Hydro could make it, the lake isn't glass like what they usually run on.

Smitty 08-15-2014 08:57 AM

Correct my if I am wrong, but aren't both boats 50 ft Mystics ???

ItsPeanut 08-16-2014 05:34 AM

I believe you are correct. We know the hp difference but does anyone know if there are any differences between the hulls as in materials and layup??

fastdonzi 08-16-2014 01:22 PM

Last night on Facebook Steve C said they were well in to the 200's on the 1st day testing :)

Von Bongo 08-20-2014 10:48 AM

Supposed to be 101 on Saturday and 98 on Sunday with high humidity. Might make it tough on Qatar to break the 224 on Saturday as they don’t let the boats run until 11AM and usually they start late, closer to noon so probably be over 90 by then, Sunday they can get out at 10:00 so it should still be in the 80's but probably high 80s.

Makes about 1100-1200 feet difference in the density altitude so those motors will have to work harder. Checked the history and it was 82 degrees when My Way made their 224 run (S wind at 5-6 MPH). They ran 209 that Saturday and it would have been 88ish then.

Wind should be a nonfactor SW at 7-8 and the course runs SE to NWish.

Will be interesting.

Donzi ZX 08-20-2014 12:54 PM

It'll be interesting on whether the aerodynamic differences between the two hulls will be a factor, with My Way having recessed deck level air intakes, and Qatar having the big over-canopy one. My Way laid down their fastest pass during the first pass, when the full fuel tanks kept the boats center of gravity more forward, and on the latter runs the light fuel load (changing the center of gravity) made it more difficult to keep the bow down, scrubbing speed.

Will the air intake difference for Qatar vs My Way compound that same issue, as the fuel load lightens?

It'll be fun to watch.

I've often wondered about those huge intakes on MyWay. I know cooling a turbine is a huge part in making power and reliability. If you watch the way the air lifts the engine cowls at speed, it almost seems that all that air-packing could be too much and slowing it down.

Coolerman 08-20-2014 03:09 PM

I still wouldn't count Onken/Lightning out as it usually takes couple try's/yrs at the shootout before you can make some good headway. Also, Onken has the 52' Mystic whereas MyWay and Qatar have the earlier 50'.

Von Bongo 08-20-2014 03:11 PM

Calling my shot (not who will be top gun) but I think this will be the 1st year that more than one boat runs past the 200MPH mark.

boostbros 08-20-2014 04:13 PM

with a big jump in power its often a big learning curve to get drive line parts to handle it Copelands phenom comes to mind

When did they build a 52? I have only seen 50's from mystic.

Tborisch 08-21-2014 11:24 AM

Both recycler and Qatar have 2 extra feet of running surface over boats like mine and myway.
