The first time I went over 100 mph in a boat I was a young man and it was in an OL with mike driving. This was back when 100 was considered bad fast on the water. It was an experience i will never forget, i think i had a boner for a week. The sport has had a rough few years with loosing many people that have had way too much to loose. Im glad these guys werent added to the list. Its an expensive price for bragging rights...

Praying for a quick recovery for Mike and Joel.

Active aerodynamics were my first thought on how to solve cat blowovers.
Here's another theory, staggered engine placement as well as engine driven flywheels that would greatly increase the boats resistance to changes in pitch due to its greater rotational inertia. Sort of elegant and passive, doesn't need undeveloped aero and algorithms. Probably more reasonable for the budget most boats are built on. I have an engineering if that some how qualifies my statement better as someone earlier asked. |

100 is still a fast benchmark for most vee bottoms but for the cats 150-175-200 seem to be the new benchmarks which is a problem when it comes to many factors (ability to run a boat that fast, insurance, safety in general) and unfortunately the boats are getting faster before the other factors can catch up! |
Thoughts and prayers to them both for a quick recovery....

LOL - Gotta Love OSO!
I hope that Outerlimits, Mystic and others are taking notes right now. I am sure "we" the OSO peanut gallery can collectively solve catamaran flip overs by Friday. So far we've come up with these solutions: canards parachutes upforce downforce blow thru catamaran decks detachable pods ejection seats under trim over trim stripper poles Of the 40,000 views and 170 replies probably less than .001% of us build boats, have engineering degrees, or have worked with aerospace or hydrodynamics. In the end, I love this forum, we truly believe we can solve the worlds problems and catamaran flip overs... But in actuality the most any of us can really contribute is "dude, hold my beer" - And even that will probably turn into a "Fountain" thread. LOL The irony behind it is that this thread had 40,000 views and I will bet that is 40,000 people that hope and pray the guys on this boat get well very soon. That is a lot of positive thoughts and prayers headed in the right direction and pretty darn cool! |
