"Finally! "

Be careful what you wish for. More legislation, no thanks.

97FASTech 08-27-2014 11:36 AM

TX has the same law, except only it is born after Sep 1 1993. For any type of boat / PWC above 15hp.

buck35 08-27-2014 11:45 AM

This year in Washington anyone under 60 is now required. It has been phasing in for the last few years now.

rfgonzo 08-27-2014 11:52 AM

I never knew this was a Michigan law, good thing I'm old as dirt

waybomb 08-27-2014 12:21 PM

Millions of people have certificates (licenses) to drive, They are even tested before they can get one.

No more need for insurance and traffic court, correct? They have a certificate after all, know the laws, and won't break them..

It's all window dressing, arseholes will be arseholes, piece of paper or not.

ChadB 08-27-2014 12:36 PM

In MO they take a few days and teach the course in high schools now

So true! Not to mention A) the law isn't well known and B ) GAURANTEED won't stop the vast majority of people from violating it.

Wonder what this does for rentals.

I don't get the hatred for PWC's. I dig it when they jump our wake. I don't dig it when they turn in front of me but I don't dig it when a dumb azz in a boat does it either!

This is BS. I'll take the idiots over the pigs 9 times out of 10.

performancems 08-27-2014 02:45 PM

wow...pretty harsh punishment for riding a jet ski.

SB 08-27-2014 03:33 PM

Our government makes so many damn laws they can't enforce most of them.

I'm for less laws and more beatch slaps.

Speedracer29 08-27-2014 03:45 PM

I opened the link hoping to find female nudity, or partial nudity, at least. When I realized it regarded jet-skis, I hoped someone had authorized sinking them at will. Imagine my dismay when I found the article covered a statute that has been in place for some time.
Joe, next time I expect better from you! Lol

12meter joe 08-27-2014 06:11 PM

Damn, I feel bad bad I let you guys down. You guys bring up a good point with the new laws and less freedom for any watercraft peps.

Apology accepted. The one on the right has thighs that don't touch. That's referred to as "air-cooled from the factory". It's a highly sought-after option.

12meter joe 08-27-2014 06:30 PM

All this time I thought that was called "good personality". Huh.

Oddly, and somewhat contradictory, I have to agree with both the OP and snowhammer.

The more the gummint gets involved, the messier things tend to get. And I work for the gummint.

Still, the number of jet skis I've seen being operated around the resorts in Traverse City in flagrant disregard to both laws and common sense makes me shudder.

SB 08-27-2014 06:35 PM

We know where your are coming from. Too many PWC's are a pain in the azz...but...

Hey, now I'm hungry. That pic is giving me a craving for a Clam Bake !

Speedracer29 08-27-2014 06:36 PM

Nope. I know that's not "good personality", because every time a friend tried to set me up with some grenade their girlfriend/wife knew, they always mentioned good personality, and never, ever, did any of them have legs like that. Ok, maybe one from Sterling Heights, but it didn't work out, because her back was hairier than mine.

SB 08-27-2014 06:40 PM

What women mean:

"She has a great personality !" : She's butt ugly. If you are lucky she is a Butterface.

"She is a beatch !" : She's hot ! But watch out, she still may be a beatch !

But, Did you run your fingers through it gently as you pet it?

I'll take the hot biotch any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Well wait, twice everyday.

SB 08-27-2014 06:45 PM

Sounds great, but I've been with a few that would make you retract that statement while your crying Mercy ! LOL.

12meter joe 08-27-2014 06:53 PM

Trust me I've experienced the biggest kookoos around. That's why I keep it "short term". I've crossed paths with many and figured out a system that works for me lol. Besides, I don't like when they talk while I'm watching tv.

Crude Intentions 08-27-2014 07:02 PM

One thing I've learned in life is in general no matter how big a biotch she is if you don't take her chit and put her in her place she responds well. This may be never ending but it generally works. They usually act this way because people out up with it.

12meter joe 08-27-2014 07:10 PM

^ agreed

PremierPOWER 08-27-2014 07:29 PM

Why would so many people in our sport, who are probably without question the most hated category of watercraft out there, hate PWC's so much? Sure, teens can be stupid on them but so can anybody at any age on any type of watercraft. A boater safety course is a good idea but should be for anyone at any age for any watercraft, not just under 35 year olds on PWC. I love jet skis, as we have 5 of them but have been doing it since the early 90's and follow all the rules of the water.

I don't hate jet skis at all but, seems to be more irresponsible jet ski riders than boaters. I had several myself and also followed the basic boating rules. Don't get me wrong , I was a bit crazy and a cruiser wake jumper big time but always kept my distance. I think because they're cheaper and easier to get on the water makes them more likely to be operated by any joe blow without a clue. I have been cut off a dozen times by these people and only twice by a boater.

I mean, seriously?

I knew a guy once that said they are all the same, just different addresses.

But I never took any of his "advice" as he had been married 3 times.......

From my experience, if you're following the rules of the water on a PWC, you are the exception, not the rule. I don't hate PWC's, they are just inanimate objects.... I think the small size, manueverability, low cost, and prevalence of PWCs adds to the generally poor operating manners of inexperienced riders.
I have friends with PWCs, and someone is always begging to borrow them, but none of our mutual friends have ever asked to borrow the boats. They may fear launching, or don't want to learn how to operate a boat, or they already have an idea what the answer would be, but in any case, nobody asks for the boats, only the PWCs.

mcprodesign 08-28-2014 12:03 AM

I don't know what the hello a personal water craft is, but I love jet skis, especially the kind you stand up to ride.( As long as someone with a brain is operating it.) that is all

SimonS32 08-28-2014 05:01 AM

In Ohio anyone that operates a watercraft with more than 10hp must have a boaters safety certificate if born after 1983. I sell watercraft and encourage anyone that is buying to take the course. Also to know the basic rules of navigation. I can't say that they all do but at least I try to make them aware. If stopped on the water in Ohio you will be asked if you have this certification.

As for the other debate my votes is for the beaches! They are way more fun!!!

35? Talk about the government over stepping its authority.
You can go fight and die for our country at 18 but DONT RIDE THAT JET SKI!!

Yes, but the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard all offer the 18-year-old basic and specialized training programs....
Driving anything on public domain is a privilege, not a right. With privilege comes responsibility.
Many school districts offer the Michigan boater safety program as part of the curriculum in middle-school, and the program is offered at no cost at various locations to adults. The news article points to the fact that the individuals ticketed believe they should have been notified, but the onus was on them, ultimately.

I've hunted down a few 50+'rs with a young child on the back that have crossed right in front of my boat oblivious to anything else going on.

Speedracer29 08-28-2014 09:46 AM

FWIW, I'm pretty sure there's at least one state in the union with really lax PWC regulation... I encourage the unlicensed and uninformed PWC owners/operators to seek out that state and move/vacation/operate their PWCs there. Heck, stop by some of my local lakes and pick up a half dozen or so.... Make it a party of Darwin-esque proportions.

And anyone in Michigan who carries a concealed gun must have a license and registration for said gun which entails proper training. Therefore, only those with proper training and permits own/carry guns right? (sarcasm intended). Point is, these laws affect the law abiders, i.e. the 34 year old father of three on vacation who gets a safety check from the po-po. We can't legislate common sense and decency and respect back into our society. Are PWC's a PITA? yeah, alot of the time. WIll a ticket and safety course eliminate that? doubtful.

Is a horsepower limit on boats over 20 foot with a driver under 50 on a non-closed off course in the future? I hope not

I see your original point Joe and I didn't mean to bust on ya. I'll put up with a ton of guff from my fellow citizen and look for resolve in a civil way between him and I before I will give up my freedoms to some dudes who think they know how we "ought" to be controlled.
No, I haven't had too much coffee, just airing it out.:flag:

Carry on with the pics

This law has been in place for a while in MI..... At least the last 5 years.
