How much to replace rear main?

Twin 5.7 mag P-29 I guessing that where my oil leak is coming from the port rear main. What should I be looking to pay to have the engine pulled and have it fixed and put back in?

First try to snug the pan bolts. Over numerous heat cycles they tend to loosen up.

Good luck!!

It takes about 4 weeks to leak out 4 quarts and then the leaking seams to stop. Can the pan bolts be reached without pulling the engine?

Sure, just cut the back seat out :D

Personally I would have the engine pulled, smoke tested, and all gaskets replaced. My guess is $800-$1400 complete

If it leaks while sitting, it's not likely the rear main. There isn't 4 quarts above it to leak out. Look at where the dipstick goes into the pan/drain plug/any other pan fittings.

Smoke test-A machine that burns mineral oil? and pumps the smoke into the crankcase, basically, usually used in the intake to detect vacuum leaks.

Yup and yup!

A smoke machine can be used to test anything that shouldn't leak.

For you engine, drain the oil, next place the smoke in the dip stick tube, let it run til u see smoke from the breather, then plug breather. The leak will be the next thing to show a smoke trail

FIXX 09-02-2014 05:51 PM

my smoker has a ultra violet dye in it so you can pin point the leak with a black light..you can also just but the uv oil dye from napa and use a black light to pin point the leak,,you might have a loose drain plug..yes they are still have drain plugs in the pan! ..

Could also be leaking from the oil filter adaptors..

Is it because it only holds 4 quarts ?

Sorry. Tough long sweaty day at work. A little punchy.

After talking to a Mechanic today and reading your guys post. I'm just going to drop it off at the Marina and they can call me when it's fixed. I thought it would be a lot more to pull a motor and put back together. I'll recap this thread when the dust settles what was wrong with it.

Try using something like what www.tracerline.com has to offer for finding your leak sources. We have had good luck using it to find leak sources.

Also google homemade smoke machines for leak detection. Most professional auto shops have them but they run a grand and above in cost. At one time some kid made a homemade smoke machine for leak detection and posted it on youtube if I remember correctly. Could be wrong where I seen it as it was a couple of years ago, he had a really good set up on the cheap.

This is funny some old timers back in the day (showing my age now) use to use a rubber hose connected to a intake source on the motor and blow thick cigar smoke into the hose while the engine was running to find their leak areas.. Anyways use to think that was funny than hell back in the day.

Prob 8 hrs labor to R & R the engine and maybe 4 hrs to replace the rear main + a couple hundred for gaskets, seal, oil, misc.

Please let us know what you find!!

Good luck!!

Hole rusted in the bottom of the oil pan.

BUP 11-19-2014 01:20 PM

Coat your new oil pan externally before installment. I forgot the name of the corrosion resistance product that we painted on. I have heard some saltwater marine shops using a coatings like Rhino lining as well. I do not know how well a Rhino lining type of coating will hurt dissipating heat from the oil pan. maybe something to look into if you boat in saltwater to stop rusted out oil pans. FWIW

You take it to Myrick?

northernoffshore 11-19-2014 01:23 PM

por15 works well

BUP 11-19-2014 01:42 PM

That's the one POR 15 = (paint over rust) and there is another one we used.

Knot 4 Me 11-19-2014 01:49 PM

If the one is rusted thru you have to wonder how far off the other one is.

Yep that's Fergie in the pic by the engine in my last post .We are going to go ahead and pull the other one and paint the bilge and make it look new under the hatch again.

My buddy that owns a big body shop said he would block sand and paint the Blackhawks for $350-$400 in think I should have this done while there off sounds like a no brainer.
