Default What I Have Learned From OSO (suggestion for a sticky that non experts should read)

  1. Take what you think you know, divide it in half then divide that in half again
  2. Take your budget for that rebuild/refresh and double it
  3. Take your time estimate for that rebuild/refresh and triple it
  4. Check the classifieds before starting that project-see #1
  5. The best/cheapest/quickest way to turn your family hauler in to a 70 mph offshore is to buy a 70 mph offshore
  6. Ask first, buy motor parts combos later
  7. Save your money and have a pro build your motor or buy lots of beer and become friends with Mike Tkach, Mild Thunder, and Icedppl
  8. Don't quote which pars are in your engine unless its still stock, built by one of the engine gods, or you bought every part yourself
  9. You probably don't understand props
  10. You probably don't understand hulls and hydro dynamics
  11. You probably don't understand drives
  12. You probably don't understand how much HP it takes to gain speed or how much each hp costs to buy, and maintain
  13. You probably don't know how big a 4 foot wave is
  14. Don't bother entering that poker run that is coming to a town near you unless you are ready to take out a second mortgage, (remain a spectator)
  15. You may never understand how so many working class people can afford such fast boats
  16. Before you start a boat refresh/rebuild you should check in on your marriage because you will put it to the test
  17. If there is any way that you can learn to be satisfied with the boat and speed you have you will save yourself a ton of stress
  18. There is no such thing as a fast, quiet, loud, good looking, chick magnet, 12 passenger carrying, fuel efficient, cheap boat. They don't exist
  19. You will never be at Ron's Skaterfest so you might as well stop fantasizing
  20. You should read about 1 years worth of OSO posts before you even consider a project because by then you will understand how little you really know and are really capable of.
  21. Learn that if you are a know it all you are in the wrong place
  22. Learn that OSO is a place to ask for and offer advice not criticize
  23. If you don't know don't bother answering the thread because you will only distract from the real information
  24. Beaks are the fastest but cant handle rough water
  25. Beaks are the fastest and can handle the rough better than anything
  26. Beaks are fast because they are light until you actually weigh one
  27. Cigarettes are the best
  28. Cigarettes are old and fat
  29. Steps are dangerous in any wave bigger than 3 inches
  30. Stepped hulls are the greatest
  31. Flat hulls are slow
  32. Flat hulls are the best
  33. Skaters are the fastest
  34. Mercury is like the Mafia and Crack Cocaine and the Hottest chick in town
  35. Feel free to add, and thanks for all the great advice

35) Being out on the water is God's Wonder Drug. It's worth every penny. Be it a canoe to a 1 Million Dollar Offshore. If you don't get out on the water, you are not living.

50% of the people here want to know how to make their 330 hp 454 into a fire breathing monster motor. The other 50% will tell then they are wasting their time and money.

If you buy a used drive here, it will be junk after 17.4578 seconds of use.

If you are ripped off by an OSO member and post about it, 37 members will immediately volunteer to knock on the offending members door and beat them severely about the head and shoulders, yet no one will actually show up for the blanket party.

39. whatever you plan on doing......your not qualified and wasting your money.
40. you won't be safe towing a 23' formula unless you have a diesel dually with 19.5 rims, triple axle trailer, and EOH brakes.
41. you shouldn't be a member unless you live in the great lakes, or on the east coast.
42. you have to buy a 42' fountain if you want a 38' boat.
43. if you try running 401HP through a bravo 1 it WILL grenade no matter what.
44. you need hydraulic steering for anything above planing speed.
45. prop slip is not taking off a girls clothes.

anyone else?

lmfao

46. You might as well not bother asking for advice because you are going to ignore it anyway
47. 60 mph separates the men from the boys and the rookies from their wallets. Be happy with 55
48. The boating world is the most effective way to turn a boat worth nothing into a boat that you invested 50 k in to and is still worth nothing
49. Where do all of these people find the money the time and the talent? heck is everyone on OSO a master machinist?
50. Your garage is never big enough
51. If you are a rookie you might as well spend a lot of money t do it right because you are going to do it twice anyways
52. Divide the dollars spent and the hours worked into the hours on the water and you will learn how crazy east coast boaters are

46. no matter how hard you try, how much time you have, and how persistent you are, you will never EVER exceed the entertainment provided by the legend JIM DARR, so don't bother trying
46.5 if someone wants advice on the first boat they are going to purchase, a 50' skater with turbine engines, no matter what their screen name is, it's JIM DARR

47.don't defend your friend who is being accused of stealing boat, cuz he might have stolen boats
48.even if your friend is convicted, he isn't guilty, he was framed and it was someone else who had better lawyers who should have been in jail
49.if a boat is "meticulus" "kept with an open checkbook" "pristine" "garage kept" "never even started" "repaired professionally" there is no need to check the boat over, definitely buy it sight unseen cuz it's guaranteed to be "like new"
50.don't EVER ask what happened in a boating accident, how a fatality could have been prevented, offer information u have about the event, or post news stories about the event, as you will be beat down to within an inch of your own cyberlife

51. Boaters from the snow belt will be picked on by boaters from the sun belt every winter .
52. We don't care .
