In 1974 the 35 foot Cigarette boat that was raced as Spirit and then Benihana, won the Bahamas 500.
Because of the so called oil shortage, the race was reduced down to just 303 miles.
The engines were Mercruiser engines of 600 HP each with SSM #3 drives.
For the entire 303 miles the boat averaged for the race.....83.4 MPH

hehe just splitting hairs it was 82.9. So how is that possible? Were those boats much lighter than our cafes? Hurricane tailwind?

The race boats of 1974 were not that much lighter.
They had a CG that was well researched and the engines were staggered.
Props as compared to today were very primitive, no one ran 4 blades back then.

true, I will say after being on MANY boats and Cigs, the COG is one reason why the Mistress rides like it does, now if I could stagger it.... I bet it would be bad azz..... I have told guys ;look where my bolsters are compared to most.... now I am 260 lbs and a passenger.... great COG

I looked at a few pictures and it seems like the Mistress and Cafe's have a similar cockpit space between the front and back seats but it looks like the Mistress has a longer engine bay.....it almost looks like there's enough room in the engine bays to stagger them. Not sure on the exact measurements but it looks like the Mistress front seats are more forward than the Cafe's.

hers pics, one is next to Skramers cafe, you can see the seat difference, boats were tied together perfect side by side.... COG is totally different..
I will tell you my ride on Skramers cafe in Lake Erie 3-5's is what sold me on Cigs, he was the one that told me the Mistress was even better ride... I would own a Cafe in a heartbeat, very good boat.
