Jet Set 195mph? Radar or GPS?
 

How do you measure that speed? I'm curious, because I was reading a dispute a while back about speed claims. Seems to me that the best bet is GPS. Also seems to me that air pitot would be the worst. After all, a row boat can do 55 mph if it's headed in to the wind. Don't get me wrong. Anybody doing more than 150 mph in an open cockpit has got screws loose in their head.

Skeptical, but open minded to the right explanations. Let's hear it.

My friend is the only one I will ever ride with at that speed. He is scared to hell of his boat at that speed too. You'd be crazy not to. Mostly he's scared of turning. I think that is a good thing. It's probably more like extreme respect than fear, but both are good for self preservation.

A good friend of mine puts on a poker run in Canada and he brought his brother-in-law with him in his new 32' Velocity that does high 80's. They launched off a wave that wasn't extremely big but when they landed his brother-in-law broke his back.:( He called 911 and had to have him removed from the boat. Very sad.

I've ridden with this guy before and he is a good driver. He even took lessons from Velocity for a while to learn the boat.

I like my (hopefully) 70-75 mph Cafe Racer. Not too many worries about landing too hard and I'm driving.:D

I'll know for sure next year at the SCOPE poker run. Look out Pacific Ocean.:cool:

JetSet won this year's NYC poker run with an AVERAGE speed of 172 from the GW bride to the Tappan Zee bridge. About a 20 mile run. He has been radared in the 190s. He has been GPSed in the 190s.

The day I was on the boat (now more than a few times) (this was my first time on it with a boat load of Marine Police buddies). We ran with the breeze at our backs and saw 195 on the front seat Speedo and 193 on the back seat speedo. Both are air speed indicators. Believe it. The engines put out 1850 hp each.

There is nothing below the hull. No water pickups as the engines are air cooled. He needs just 4 inches of water at 100mph. And it can be full of weeds, who cares, just chop em up.

Nuts? You must realize that if any thing happens at that speed, it would probably be ugly. Frankly my concern was that the 1/4 canopy would let go and take my head off.

Thats a ride ! Huh Ron ?? I was in Jet Set with less power and the wrong props and saw mid 180's running north AND south!! I am very glad I got the chance to do it but I wonder if I would do it again ....... Of course , 20 years ago ,60 was too fast . 10 years ago , 100 was too fast . Now 100mph is pretty common . So you can't say he's crazy for doing 180-190 . It's just the next step !:cool: Just because some of us don't do it on a regular basis dosen't mean it's wrong or crazy. THe BLOW boaters cry about us doing 50 .

How fast will boats be in 10 more years ? What power will they have and what will they look like ?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have any idea how many horse ponies the Jet Set had. I guess that 190's shouldn't be a problem. There's a few brave guys out there that seem to want to do this with open cockpits. I watched some offshore yesterday. 120 mph is big and the boats are blowing over! So what's the deal with 190? This is the only racing industry where the weekend hobby boaters are faster than the league racers. Oh well, makes the lakes and rivers a hell of a lot more interesting. Unless you're a bird watcher!:p
