pic is not very clear but
sure looks like a mercury ob allunimum flywheel
and motor turned with exhaust going forward
long time ago land and sea made an expansion chamber exhaust plate for the 2.0-2.5 motors
I had 1 of my merc ob alcy drag motors on a drag sand trike many yrs ago
and had a bud do a scale plane with 1
2 strokes are very versatile as can mount in any direction

Cooling system would be hard to fabricate. You'd probably be better off going with a snowmobile engine. That is cool though! I remember seeing a big speedboat rigged with 6 Merc V-6 2-stroke powerheads a while back.

cooling system is simple,,,,
used a F1 bottom adaptor plate for ex tuner and that's where the water tube entered
so that's the inlet
outlet from the heads,,,,,,,,,
run electric pump or drive 1 off the flywheel
the merc v 6 used was the 2.5 litre and will turn up to 12,000rpm @ 325+ hp window on alcy when fully ported
then add 100+ nitrous to it would make good power with torque
trike held world record for many yrs
there was no smomobile motor that had that power from 3 cyls
