[Boca Grande]- High performance powerboat operators have worn out their welcome on Boca Grande Key during the annual poker run from Miami to Key West and during the powerboat championship races. 100 powerboats and speed boats rafted around and beached on the offshore island in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge getting the powers that be in a tizzy. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sent The Florida Powerboat Club a letter saying, “Please understand that Boca Grande is a sensitive resource area. Boca Grande serves as an important migratory bird foraging area, and landing on the beach is prohibited above mean high water. At this point, it is unlikely we would be able to complete the necessary review for the ‘Fun Run,’ so we ask that you remove any reference to that option being available for this current year’s event, including a helicopter shoot in proximity to the island.”
However, both the party and the helicopter flyover still occurred, and refuge managers are not happy about it. Photo: Rob O’Neal/The Citizen

Article overlooked mentioning the drones and girls working the pole. LOL Always someone wanting to spoil our fun. We will just have to find another spot and there are some or just drop anchor and raft up which will be even more chaotic than what we get to witness each year. LOL In fairness to Stu and FPC there were a lot of boats out there on their own volition as well his club boats.

To me KW has been wrecked for decades....it is a tacky tourist trap and has totally overwhelmed the area with development. So they are trying to say powerboats rafting up to a remote island for ONE day a year is hurting the environment......yeah oh ok!

F*cking nature nazis!! (Roll eyes)

It's not an official part of the poker run. F*ck them! See you at the sand bar next year! ;)

glassdave 12-14-2014 04:52 PM

cant imagine they would have any luck what so ever enforcing it. Even if it is not an official stop there would be nothing stoping anyone from collectively stopping.

lol, see ya out there next year
