36' Spectre Question?

Wondering what this boat can handle as far as wave heights comfortably? Always had v hulls, but thinking of switching to a cat. Seems like a very fast boat with mild power. Just don't know if this boat is good for the Atlantic swells, down in Florida. See all lot of them on videos, in mostly pretty calm conditions. Just don't want my wife hitting me in the head to much when we are airborne, starts hurting after a while. LOL

:(I too have a female "Rev Limiter"..

We raced one on the US Offshore circuit in C class, was a great boat. Flew nice, built very well, won us a National Championship. Great in the big water.

Team Saris thanks for the reply saw a video of the boat on youtube where you did a short pull, sounded great!!

thisistank 12-30-2014 12:00 PM

Saris, did your 36 have the pod? I understand they built a few without one

A buddy had a couple 36's. The one with the pod. I wouldn't recommend any big water with a pod. It tends to come down and slap the aft portion of the hull creating a fairly jolting ride. We ran it a couple times in the pacific but mostly on Havasu. Great boats, lotta fun. I'd own one in a heartbeat just wouldn't expect too much big water comfort.

Here's a video I shot of one of the boats in Havasu.

Do anyone have a pic of what the 36 Spectre looks like with and without the pod?

I dont know about big swells,my guess is that the boat would like it. Mine likes the short choppy waves Lake st Clair has to offer. You just dont need the Rev limiter with you .Boat is very dry as well.

There are quite a few down here at the Ozarks... I know its not the ocean but on a weekend its some extremely rough water and i have seen Spectre's eating it up!

hopefully my next boat!

Hemi 12-30-2014 03:57 PM

Jamesgang thanks for the pic. If I am correct your spectre has the pod in back? How do you like the boat? What type of power and top speed?

Is that what they called a pod????????????????? Kinda looks like some kind of platform.

Boater8987 12-30-2014 04:10 PM

My 36 Poker Run has been a great ride for 11 yrs now. Nice construction, rigging, and ride. Of course I am biased but I think it is one of the best bang for the buck cat boats out there. I just dropped mine off at Jay's shop in Clearwater for new canopies. Pilini Marine Technologies 727-773-5603 Jay's cell 727-954-5688. Take a ride over there and take a look. Talk to the man who built them.

I don't think thats a pod looks like a fixed tunnel tab/platform, I stand corrected if wrong. Mine has a hydraulic Dana tunnel tab in the same place. Every Spectre I have seen over the years, a lot of them, has been a true tunnel construction. I didn't know Jay made a pod cat. Learn something new every day. LOL

Outkast Rafe 12-30-2014 07:02 PM

That is a tunnel extension and the only spectre I've ever seen with it. Most have adjustable tunnel tabs which creates more lift in the tunnel by trapping air. I've also never seen a 36 spectre with a center pod. I'm assuming you're talking about a pod that runs down the center like a DCB.

I think a spectre is the absolute best bang for your buck. There is no other entry level big cat close to it. I loved mine and it did well in every mixture of water I put it in. I think a 36 with 525 and whipples would be a perfect boat just need to man those sticks and watch the drive. I had MDG650s and bravo in mine and never had a drive issue.

PM SonnySpectre he has a pristine one for sale

That's a non- pod model.

TeamSaris 12-30-2014 10:48 PM

I don't believe they ever built any 36s with center pods...or 30s or 32s for that matter.
Tunnel tabs yes, we had one on the 36 we raced. But not center pods like a DCB or Eliminator. At least Jay didn't. Do you have a picture Tank? Id be curious to see it. I'm thinking its a one off.

TeamSaris 12-30-2014 10:58 PM

Here's another video Hemi. We were one of the original Spectre dealers, Jay Pilini built a great boat.
If you have any questions we'd be happy to talk to you. I think there is a super clean fresh water 36 for sale about 30 miles from our shop too, Ill ask around. Has whippled 500s we tuned. Give a call if we can help out, 518-644-3080

I am pretty sure jay never built a cat with center pod,he used a tunnel extension and tunnel tabs on the 36 to help ride control,i would leave it neutral with the tunnel and worked great, great boats for the money and built real well, cats typically like chop1-3 and run on the top of them ,never had one in the ocean always ran mine in the chesapeake bay and ran great

I remember your hot-rod, you used to come in Lloyd's creek with it, my father like your boat, talking with you had him considering getting a used 32' Skater, I wished you would have kept talking to him.

I liked your 36' Spectre...

My buddy has a 2001 36 Spectre with 500 Efis would sell for $74,000 on a Myco trailer.

obrien 01-01-2015 12:59 AM

There was never a 36 built with a center pod. We did build some with the bolt on tunnel extension that was also a nice little swim platform. There were a lot built with tunnel tabs. The only boats that had any thing resembling a pod would have been the 30 ' s built for triple outboards and I wouldn't call that piece we added a pod

TeamSaris 01-01-2015 09:49 AM

That's what I thought obrien, thanks for the clarification
