Do you know your history?
OFFSHORE HISTORY 101
The year is 1967 Name the American races run on these dates: October 12 October 14 October 21-22 November 3 Who won the Miami to Nassau race that year What was so unusual about his boat Who finished second and who was the co driver of that boat What was the strangest boat in the longest California race that year Who was the first throttle man in the sport What race did he start throttling Who was the driver of the first boat ever to use a throttle man Who was the most naturally gifted driver this throttle man ever worked with |
First throttleman was the immortal Bobby Moore, for Billy Wishnick I believe. Not sure of the first race. The naturally gifted driver he is referring to was Snapper Norris. The other answers, I'm not so sure about.

It is pretty amazing that back then these guys could run that many major races in less than a month. And they were not all in the same ocean. You are on a roll, keep thinking. |
I'll try a few off the top of my head.
Maritime, turbines, Jim, Walt, Hal.? Magnum, Don, Knocky? Spooky? |
Allan Brown Mi-Na 1967
|
Ducktail got that one right. It was Brownie who won the Miami to Nassau race that year.
Jeff. If you are saying the Turbine boat was the most unusual for the Miami Nassau race, that is incorrect. Who finished second...you met him at OFF Spooky is right for the California race that year. It was a 20 foot Formula that had one big block mounted in the center of the boat, with the driver sitting with his back against the transom and the motor between his legs. The co-driver was sitting outside the transom on a frame built seat, holding on to a steering wheel that didn't work. |
Was it Odell?
Are you thinking the twin on single prop installation as unusual? Jeff |

Are you thinking the twin on single prop installation as unusual? Jeff Second boat in was driven by Odell and co driver was Mel Riggs Well done now name those races in the fall of 1967....where were they held? Yes two engines on one shaft and one prop was unusual.....and then to win with that setup made it more so. |
I'm not going to cheat by going into a book.
Here goes, hurricane classic, Sam Griffith memorial, Bahamas 500. There were also the Delta of Don Shead for '66 and the Maltese Magnum II of John Kenerly for '68 featuring the two engines on one prop. Jeff |

Jeff October 12 Miami to Nassau October 14 Around Nassau Island October 21 - 22 Long Beach to San Francisco November 3 Miami to Key West |
You guys should watch this (there is 3 parts).
My boat is at 8:50 :p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kALNooZRYfM |
Didn't they race a houseboat in the Miami-Nassau race once?
|
The Jacoby Girls in a Drifter Cruz? I think that was the Bahama's 500.
I would guess it happened more than once. Jeff |

I knew the answer about half by threads here where Brownie and Rich Luhrs discussed these races, the time when "men were real men" because they had to manage real offshore long distance races and someone, I think I remember Charly McCarthy posted videos or links to videos of these races.
As I dont remember everything so very well I also had to look up in the internet what I thought I do remember of the Miami-Nassau races. I know by the yachtpages that the one or two who answer a riddle put the next question, so I start. Here: Why did it happen that "The last we saw of Don, he and the boat jumped the sea wall and disappeared into the woods." ? And who went before this happened to one of Don Aronow's backyards with a pistol and shot the lamps dead? The backyard belonged to the facility of which boat brand? And why did he kill the poor lamps? |

1. Exactly.
2. The Silence of the Lamps I was not sure whether this story is part of the documentaries/movies about Aronow. If that is only information on your webpage I am glad that I found a question and answers that are not so common. The facility was at that time used for the Magnum brand, is that right? And Don seemed to be jealous that Allan Brown got that done not only to finish Miami-Nassau but even to win or did the "combat" happen before? The only left question, did Aronow "disappere in the woods" with a boat that was not his own but that of a customer and he was not aware what he was driving? Do you owner of that very nice webpage supernova19 know that? I don't but that would be interesting. |
Didn't follow Don all that well except for the connection to Brownie being I'm a Nova guy but .....
from SuperNova19.com, Sometimes having this attitude didn't work out and Don had the scars to prove it. Like one time after Brownie left to run the Donzi shop when it was sold. "Aronow came running down the channel in one of his new Magnum boats doing about 70 mph trailing a huge wake and wearing a big grin. He cut the throttle and threw the wheel over to wash me down while I stood on a dock," Brownie recalls. "The only problem was the throttle was broken and the boat never slowed down. The last we saw of Don, he and the boat jumped the sea wall and disappeared into the woods." |

As that one is winding down...........
Which famous offshore writer went to Annapolis as a Navy cadet? He won the famous Miami to Nassau race, but his main business was vacuum cleaners, name and year race was won. They were tied for first place and racing far from their own countries, so when one of them had engine problems and couldn't compete, the other one went out and rented him a race boat so he could race. Two names and the race they were in. When Magnum needed a new deck for a new race boat they built Billy Martin, they called a competitor and asked them to make one for him, they did and two different boats had the same deck in that race. Name of other boat company. He wanted to go offshore racing, but everyone except Aronow, told him he was too old. With a new Aronow boat he won his first race. Driver's name.and age when he started. Oldest driver to build himself a new race boat for his 75th birthday. |
Oldest driver to build a new raceboat=Bob Nordskog.
