No extension boxes. All of them pretty much run #6 drives. Used to run #5's but they had a high failure rate. #6's have a lot of built in extension compared to a 5 so was certainly no need. It was noted by some that trim effort was easier with the 6 compared to 5's.
In comparison to offshore boats we run our drives very deep! For 1 main reason, to see the skier. If you ran them surfaced as they are designed to you wouldn't see the skier for the rooster! I'm assuming this also helps with the high speed handling and cornering also.
I have noted since the 1350 packages have come along and become so popular is they don't appear as well balanced in big water. The custom twin turbo set ups run either turbo 400 or powerglide gearboxes (both use 1st and 3rd, second is removed). These are quite long in comparison to a merc transmission hence the custom engines end up further forward in the boat.
None really run true steps. Some have step Chine's and strakes but the hull surface and running plank are flat. Not sure why they don't run them but the need to corner very fast and tight may have something to do with it?
