Anyone heard of this?

Anybody count the number of times the phrase "My Checkmate Super Vision Warrior" was used in that post? I lost count.

+1. Thats funny. I noticed that too.

performancems 01-14-2015 01:24 PM

Why Did He Capitalize almost Every Word in that Entire Post?

Fast Shafts 01-14-2015 01:43 PM

I'm calling BS! Top quality parts-except for the 1990 hull-which was blueprinted.
Curious minds would love to know about the drive and prop combo-things which were conveniently left out of his post.

River_Runner 01-14-2015 01:49 PM

That has got to be a record???

Knot 4 Me 01-14-2015 01:49 PM

You've never heard of SSM drives?

Fast Shafts 01-14-2015 01:57 PM

I've heard the drives referred to as SSM3, 4, 5 etc. never really heard them referred to as Mercury Super Speedmaster. I'll edit my original post-still calling BS! LOL

scarab63 01-14-2015 01:58 PM

I'd believe it I suppose. .......must b ass heavy with a ssm
I'd rather see it though.
That'd be hairy

Feverz29 01-14-2015 02:13 PM

I had to stop reading, "I", "Me" I'm in love with myself, bla, bla, bla.

RNGRDVE 01-14-2015 03:39 PM

I wasn't there to see it for myself but after some conversations I've had with Sammie online I believe both him and the story are legit. Sammie has helped a lot of members on the forum with rigging of their vintage Checkmates. He is a very honest and helpful guy and that his love for boats definitely gives him a writing style all his own.

the deep 01-14-2015 03:42 PM

Got to be a good guy , his name is Sam .

phragle 01-14-2015 04:21 PM

-5 drive?

sounds about right. if he had a #3 drive and and special -5" lower like he said then it would be almost as short as a #5 ssm. he wouldn't need a #5 ssm with the light weight of the boat but would need to make it a surface drive like a 5. sounds like it is possible with a 1500 lb boat and 1200 hp. got to have the nuts to drive it that fast though

Drew555 01-14-2015 05:44 PM

What about terminal hull speeds here? Can this hull make these kind of speeds without serious chine walking or losing control? I call bull**** also. I have driven checkmate over 80 miles an hour very scary.most people in the boating will add 10 mph this guy has just gone too far!

Team Archer 01-14-2015 06:01 PM

It's easy to find out the truth just find out the gear ratio and prop pitch RPM and there you go. Also I don't remember Mercury having any new SSM drives in the early 90s other than the Black Hawk.

I had my 30 which would have been called a 28 in the 1990's up to 120. His 22 would be a 24 in today's boating world. Also he didn't say 140, he said 131 and change. I think he did it.

Drew, my 25ft Checkmate would run 97 all day long like it was on rails, with wife and two children on board, That was 25 years ago as well. Hummm.....? Terminal hull speed assumes that most of the hull is in contact with the water. I believe the claims are possible. Just my opinion!

Feverz29 01-14-2015 08:02 PM

I think the definition of insanity should be a picture of this boat. I love speed, but thats flat out scary. Always impressed with people who have an idea and go for it.

Drew555 01-14-2015 08:44 PM

If it's true he gets the big balls award . Not sure I would feel safe

mike tkach 01-14-2015 09:06 PM

with that power to weight ratio i believe it is the truth.i used to go a lot faster in less boat way back in my drag boat days.how i survived back then was nothing short of a mirical.

I take it you raced in the 1" to 2" cop at Blarny... That water condition can be down right scary for most of those boats racing...

abones 01-14-2015 09:32 PM

Well it is very true, I have bought my Checkmates from Sammie, and have been in his personal boats as well, I never felt at any time that the boats where (on the edge) I never once experienced chine walk when he was at the wheel, He would make sure that his guys(customers with fast boats) were taught how to drive them before delivery, and he did the teaching! He had many real fast set ups, outboards, IOs, Jets. Trust me the Vision was a beast for it's time, but not his fastest boat! He had a much faster boat at the same time as the Vision. Sammie was my boating Mentor, engine builder mentor and a good friend, He taught me and his boat club members a lot about the responsibility that comes with owning a fast boat. I could go on and on but this should address the validity of the Vision! I think the 22 Vision had a 20 FT running surface with a 2 FT built in swim platform.

I met Sammie in 74-75 we are talking 40 years ago

never raced at blarny,s.i was out there in a friends boat watching the races and witnessed a ski boat towing a skier in the shut down area, that was enough for me.

doubleduecedonzi 01-14-2015 10:30 PM

I came across this while searching the net for some fast 22's. Putting a 540 in my 22zx. The fastest recorded 22zx ran high 80's( oso's Shanghied Again )With procharged 454 mag. He said that's all the boat can do is on the verge of loosing control past low 80's. What make's this boat so drastically more capable of speed than any other 22.

shueman 01-15-2015 01:22 AM

Here's a quick speedo vid of a 950hp 22' Daytona that runs above 120mph...

It's a lot easier to that speed out of 22 cat vs a v hull.

fastdonzi 01-15-2015 07:56 AM

If he was doing it at Lake X he was trespassing :)

buck35 01-15-2015 09:14 AM

So what are the boats the auzzis are pulling skiers at 135?

SB 01-15-2015 09:19 AM

Not to take away from this thread as this Checkmate person and history is awesome !

To answer above post, I know Nordic has a 21ft that some waterski racers use that have Merc 1350's installed.

Here's one:

buck35 01-15-2015 09:30 AM

So not impossible at all,but large cahonies definitely required as well as optimum conditions.

But you need 1350 HP and a Six Drive to pull a skier. Jeez, I'd need a 46" dress shirt sleeve after one pull by that bad boy!

Cole-One 01-15-2015 12:51 PM

It's incredible either way.... that speed in that boat... what a freakn ride !!!! Years ago PowerBoat Magazine did a article on a single engine 28 Howard Bullet with 1200 HP and it ran 130 something. On the SeaRay fourm there is a Fast 22's thread but nothing near those speeds....

payuppsucker 01-15-2015 03:36 PM

There's a guy on here that had a twin turboed LS motor in a Checkmate that ran up there pretty good. I think he was over 1500hp in front of a wet sump #6. Screen name Checkmate ???.

UR2late 01-15-2015 09:04 PM

Wow. Left hand rotation.
