Hey he just thought the light from the restraunt was the channel marker, easy mistake for a 20yr licensed captain :bsflag:
With todays electronics packages he could have likely seen exactly where he was. I can with my stuff - all the new stuff will overlay the radar on the map - my grandma could navigate with todays tech. No excuse for running aground at speed with a full suite of modern gear. UD |

I think at that point you are just holding on for the ride. |

FWIW, according to local news boat was operated by a "Licensed and Insured Captain with 20 years experience" and "No alcohol involved".
Every azzhat that moved to Florida has one because they are going into the charter biz with their fishing boat. They used to give them out on the back of Cracker Jacks boxes back in the day here. |
My neighbors blues band plays there about every other weekend? At least the tiki bar should still be open.......Running on plane in reduced visibility and a supposed experienced boat Captain in charge? At least this moron did not kill anybody.......

dropping that thing into dock is easier than a video game if you just use your equipment.

Pea soup fog means no wake speed for me. Actually the only time I hated the sound of my engines was in pea soup fog, I'd turn them off frequently to listen for other ships/boats and also sound my horn. Nothing to screw around with, no excuse for this to happen equipment or not.
|
Went out on the ocean about 25 miles offshore in my Cigarette years ago, hot, lazy summer day, hardly a ripple on the water. Shut off the engine, listened to NOAA, had lunch and fell asleep on the deck...drifting along. Felt cool, woke up and the ocean was covered in dense fog. Started the engine, turned on the running lights and followed the compass heading slowly to shore (many hours later)
No panic, but certainly no high speed nonsense. |
Good thing he didn't run an Apache aground, would have caused an earthquake that would have caused the entire building to collapse. Not to mention the damage to all of the other buildings in the area........ Sorry, haven't seen or heard an Apache thread in a while and seeing your signature, Comanche3six triggered it.....,

Good thing Chuck Norris wasn't driving the CC either. They would have cut a new canal across FL, we'd have a new Florida Key (everything south of Tampa/Palm Bay), and we'd still be chasing them as they headed towards Morocco. |
Apache = Chuck Norris of Boats for those new to OSO (or those living under a rock)....

Could be Chuck Norris round house kicked that boat off it's trailer in East Texas and it came to rest inside of that restaurant????
I love chuck Norris jokes. |
WOW
In all seriousness -- besides the obvious -- SLOW DOWN !!! what is the proper protocol for traveling in fog??? I know for one that on Lake Michigan I've seen fog role in - wasn't on the water - in a heart beat -- beside soil your pants what else do you do to keep safe? I'm serious - not joking around ps I love the jokes! thanks 3pointstar |
Slow down to a crawl and if u have people on board with you put eyes on as many sides of the boat as u can and have all lights on at all times.

The captain's lawyer has already filed a lawsuit. He was quoted as saying "We are outraged that someone would build a restaurant in the path of my client's vessel !"

Post #9.....that's the funniest...........
Really? how the heck does he explain this....absolutely stupid, one explanation: clueless about operating a boat......."No really, I could see where I was going, but the throttle stuck and the steering locked......" |

I wouldn't be surprised if the pro-captain is taking the hit for this while the real culprit gets away with BUI w/injury and property damage...... I knew a guy that did this to save his brother from a ton of charges. His spur of the moment thinking was, I'll step in and say I was driving and he will avoid the charges.....instead he caught a case (leaving scene of accident w/damage....misd. charge). Then after consulting with an attorney, he realized they committed 3 felonies (insurance fraud was part 1 since he really wasn't behind the wheel in the first place but that is the story the insurance company was told). Attorney told him to take the misdemeanor charge and learn from it. |
This will be right up there with the Fountain on LOTO video... this will be on the web for years to come!!
These 3 made me laugh..... Seven sailors, 4 outboards and one center console walk into a bar..... The bartender says.......What will you have? "Morgan, party of 7; your table is ready!" |
They parked in a handicapped spot.

I have been to this place before but this guy screwed up. Looks like he had radar maybe it would have been a idea to use it. Two injured when boat crashes into Ruskin restaurant Two people were injured after a boat crashed into a restaurant in Ruskin, officials said. On Monday evening, a 39-foot SeaVee boat smashed right into the Sunset Grill restaurant on Little Harbor in Ruskin. Officials say the fog played a role in the crash. "They weren't familiar with the territory they were in and due to the fog, just became disoriented," said Nacole Revette, spokesperson for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. Witnesses describe hearing a loud crash and seeing people flee from the scene. The boat went so far into the restaurant, they say it was barely visible from the outside. "You could only see the motors and, like, five feet of the boat," bystander Alyssa Haedrich said. Seven people were on board the boat when it crashed, and two of those people sustained minor injuries. One was taken by ambulance to the hospital, while the other person drove themselves. No one inside the restaurant or on the beach was hurt. Officials say they are not sure how fast the boat was going. "We're still determining at what speed, or attempting to determine what speed it was going, because there are possible charges regarding unsafe speed for conditions, improper lookout, that sort of thing," Florida Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Baryl Martin said. "Any time you strike a beach, you should be paying attention to where you're going." The fog has been so dense that crews haven't been able to start the removal process yet. They say they have to be careful because of the amount of structural damage to the restaurant. Meanwhile, tourists say this will certainly give them something to talk about when they get home. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing to see a boat in a restaurant," Haedrich said. So far no charges have been filed. Officials have said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The restaurant is currently closed, and right now they aren't sure when they will be able to reopen. |
