New Boat Buyer Advice

I'll add this. It's always nice to have an exit strategy with a boat, ie: selling it.
If you are in NJ, I would look at a brand that you could more easily resell when the time comes. I think a lot of that West coast stuff is tough to sell in the east.

The Wizard looks super clean but I think you'll be disappointed going from a twin 29 ft boat to a single. My vote would be to freshen up the MAGS w/ new valvetrain, exhaust and cam. Should be able to add 150HP to your current ride and really wake it up for a reasonable price.

Thank you, sorry. The 29 Baja Outlaw w/ 454 MAGs is a nice setup. Freshen the motors up at 600 hours and continue having fun with that boat for a decade. Wizard looks super clean but that's a big boat for a single engine pushing a Bravo style drive. I had to replace the upper unit on my drive last year at 20 hours. Not an expense that was budgeted for. Weight and horsepower don't play well w/ a single engine Bravo style drive.

thanks. I am leaning more towards the baja although the wizard is just one pretty boat.
whats a good price for a 2000 baja with 454 mags with 170 hours?
whats a good price for a 2001 baja with 454 mags with 300 hours?
I can pm people listings if that helps further.
Thanks for all the advice!!

The Wizard does look nice in the classifieds but I'd stick with standard engines every day and twice on Sundays.
Pretty much all of us lose money on boats, the more we spend, the more we lose. The more modified a boat/engine is, the more sensitive it is to all those little things that can go wrong. Factories spend millions developing engines for a compromise of power and reliability and I don't believe others can better what Mercury have done. If you go with a worked over engine it will out perform the stock factory engine but reliability will be reduced. Unless you're a real 'spanner man', you should be able to see 70mph with stock power.
The extra power to get from 70 to 80 or 90 and so on is huge and so too is the reliability factor and the hole in the wallet when something goes wrong!
Good luck whichever way you go.

The Wizard looks immaculate. First impressions on a boat are often times excellent indicators of unseen condition. I'd take the Wizard given a good compression and leakdown test. There is lots of expensive hardware there and everything is done first class. My guess is the engine is that way as well. A cu stom engine is a chance but there is only one and not two. The 454 mag is an excellent piece. Maintainence will be very difficult because of the tight spaces in the twin configuration. Cost of maintainence gets high quick. Two of everything, twice the time. The Magic in that condition will be okay resale all day in that price range. Something you want to do is drive the boats and see what you like. It is often inconvienent to arrange a demo., but you need to do this. Try both boats and see what boat turns your crank. I like the Cali. boats because everybody and there brother doesn't have one. Some people don't like the Cali. boats. That's what makes the world go round.
