Shrink Wrap Boat in Transport?
 
I have a boat that will ready to transport about half way across the country. It will have a black hull. I'm worried about rock chips and general road rash. I've trailered boats most of my life but none this far and with a dark hull. Do you think it's worth the extra $$ to have the manufacture wrap? Thank you

I have always used a product like Rock Tamers and have not had any damage.

i would believe it would be worth it. will prevent damage and keep you your boat clean. there is a reason they haven been shrink wrapping every boat before delivery when new. if you can afford it i would believe it is worth you while..

What does the manufacture say. I would think the wrap moving from the wind could dull finish in contact areas.

If you go with the shrink wrap on a painted surface - it needs the barrier film applied to the hull....It also needs someone who knows how to shrink wrap a boat for travel which equates to putting the proper and correct amount of support and protection under the shrink material to protect the shrink from the boat/wind as well as protecting the boat surfaces from the wind forces on the shrink.

Products like the Rock Tamer depicted above, work wonders - almost a necessity on a cross country run.....a couple of small gel chips repaired will pay for the Rock Tamer

jake is correct the shrinkwrap will move around dulling the surface on the top .happened to my cig from nh to fla .it can all be fixed by buffing

When delivering painted or dark hulls, you want to protect the hulls surface. If sand gets between the shrink wrap and the hull it will damage the surface and will act as an abrasive the whole trip so we minimize the amount of shrink wrap to prevent this. Your shrink wrapper should only wrap the cockpit to prevent water from going into the cockpit. If you have a cockpit cover so much the better.

Then we put this film on all leading surfaces that would get damaged by rocks flying/bouncing on the road. As Speicher Lane said you need to get a self-adhesive protective film. We used Neil Lawson's (president of Shrinkwrap by Euroglass 800-423-1159) This problem occurs mostly on painted boats or dark
colored gel coated boats. The solution is the use of anti abrasion film or tape

A cotton full-cover is best for long trips. it protects the leading edges and keeps the cockpit dry while allowing the inside to breath
