800hp through an xr drive
#63
These threads start every year late winter when guys building bigger power start thinking about what they're hooking it to.
The title first made me think "April Fools !!!" but I realize it's no joke.
Been there, done that, got the bucket of parts and pile of Bravo rebuild bills. Never again.

Okay.. so what IS the answer ?
I'm about to start rigging my 26 Corsa.. It WILL have over 800 hp...
The hull doesn't have much rocker so I wouldn't think a surface drive would work out too well.
Is the Imco SCX the only option ?
Really hate to have to tell the wife we need a $15,000 drive on our $7000 boat....

I talk about this all the time.
I've broken plenty of Bravos on a handful of boats. Each time was overloaded with people and gear.
Modified motors and stock 502MPI's.
Regular Bravo's though.
====================================
Boating has become much cheaper since not loading boat up with people anymore.
Less fuel.
Less Drives.
Less Beer.
Less being stuck with the restaurant tab. LOL.

I have about 850 HP in my boat , originally came with 625HP , well , shortly after upgrading power , about 30 hours ...Bam ! Rebuilt drive at an expense of 5K , next one lasted about 35hrs , this was and IMCO SC drive , which is basically an XR drive , I said screw this , put on an IMCO SCX drive and now have peace of mind .I lost about 4mph on top end though .

You can put all types of snake oil in the Bravo, Polish the gears with Mother`s , freeze em in your freezer, shower them with love but at the end of the day the gears are physically too small for anything much more above it`s intended use.
