The 7s are a different story. They took a car engine and bolted it vertically to a gear case. Mercury has been on top of the game developing outboards with proprietary components. Just wondering why they're stuck on 2.6 liters.

It could be the weight...the 400's are 400 lbs lighter than a 7, that gives them a power to weight advantage. Then again they could just be trying to get the most out of that design before having to redesign and retool for more displacement.

Hondas 3.5 v6 is the only variable valve timing outboard i know of .its a big 60degree sohc unit .real simple real durable .real expensive . But oh the possibilities of something like that in a 8.2 v8 version. Especially pre-cat
could have your radical cam for off idle , and no wake zone reversion proof cam profile at idle
of course there is the cadillac blower motor outboard think its the 7 . 5.3 liter ? Unholy expensive

When it comes to 4 strokes large ci = heavy. They can typically make more power with less weight with a high reving smaller CI engine with forced induction than they can with a big CI engine NA engine.

better yet why are they still using the old iron duke 3 liter 4 cylinder that is from the late 50s! there are some wicked 4 bangers out there today i keep telling my boy if something happens to his vw passat with a 2.5 5 cylinder i want to put it in a boat, that engine is ultra smooth sounds wicked and rips i think merc is hurting the entry level boats by not marinizing a few better engines
I have my feelers into GM about getting a marine Manifold for one, as I can get one of those motors fairly easy. Would be great set-up for my pontoon that I'm already building a LS1 for. Same hp half the weight.
