10 PM's.....really?

Been a member here for a decade now and have over 2000 posts.
And yet I am limited to just 10 PM's?? Not only just 10 but that's coming in and going out. They all count. Come on folks (OSO) take a step into the 2000's at least even thought it's 2015.
And please don't tell me become a premium member. I've owned and run a few forums over the years and IMHO form what I see pop up on every page OSO is not hurting for money. Also if it wasn't for members like me there would be no OSO so how about throwing us a bone.

HTRDLNCN 03-30-2015 01:04 PM

Yup,,just another way to strong arm people into paying for "premium" membership..
I have paid in the past and was one of the lucky ones to actually recieve the tshirt
thats supposed to come with it just a little tighter on money now..

Knot 4 Me 03-30-2015 01:11 PM

If you are too cheap to pay, then simply clean out your PM folders more frequently.

Agreed.

I am frequent on another form as well (cars) and I pay them as well. God forbid you have to toss a one time a year fee at something you use daily and enjoy.

It's not even me even though I wouldn't have minded keeping a few PM's from a couple boating living legends that happened to pm me over the years. How many times have you PM'ed someone then it comes back because they have a full box? Most don't even know they are not getting them and not a single other forum I have been on does this. Maybe some minor limitations when you first join.
How about this. A notice you box is full.

Cash Bar 03-30-2015 02:34 PM

Is the email you signed up with still correct? Maybe you are missing the notices?

Biggus 03-30-2015 04:51 PM

I'm not paying. OSO should pay me for my contributions to the site.

I Had Ben Kramers direct phone # to his cell and had to delete it so I could get an offer for a free Puppy... :P

pslonaker 03-30-2015 08:54 PM

Your thinking small Danielson, must think big.

Your PM's are not controlled by by Speedy or Griff etc.. They are controlled by Internet Brands. While your 10 PMs take up miniscule bandwidth, IB is in the business of internet forums, which means forum members. So your 10 PM's grow exponentially which in turn eats bandwidth.

buck35 03-30-2015 10:29 PM

Best answer is probably to print them off and keep them in a folder so you have a record of all pms.

QWKRN U 03-30-2015 11:02 PM

Darn and I had 100's of Pms from Darr that will now be lost forever.....
Owait no loss

offshoredrillin 03-31-2015 05:41 AM

This is whats wrong with the welfare system of america. Give people something they want more. What do you expect for free? Free is worth what you pay for it.

Save screenshots. I'm active on 3 boating forums, A German Shepherd forum, a Ford F-150 forum, 2 Mustang forums, an astronomy forum, a medical forum, Facebook, discussions on our local on-line newspaper and the Detroit News and Fox 2 Detroit. I don't have to pay for any of them.

Wildman_grafix 03-31-2015 06:35 AM

^^^^^ LOL

When do you work?

Biggus 03-31-2015 06:35 AM

I belong to several other forums also, 10 pm's is a joke. All others are 1000-2500 pm's for basic (free) membership. Just don't buy into the paying member thing. It's certainly not the money, solid members add value to a site. I'm not going to pay someone to make their business worth more.

Is any business any different? Anything you buy goes to the bottom line and helps in a small way in increasing value.

SpeedGirl 03-31-2015 05:37 PM

Your lucky it is 10 PM's, years ago non-paying members got 0. It was changed to 10 when IB bought the site. :noevil:

Comanche3Six 03-31-2015 08:17 PM

If you need great powerboat info, you come to OSO.
If you want to share powerboat info, you come to OSO.
If you are getting screwed and need to bark, you come to OSO.
In the market to buy a powerboat or goodies, you come to OSO.
You want to sell a powerboat or goodies, you come to OSO.
One hand washes the other.

Pay for a membership!

Ahhh what? Lucky is what you call it? IMHO OSO is lucky to have the members it has that spend the time they do on this board making it what it is. I check on 5 boat forums on a regular basis. 3 of which are very minor league compared to OSO and yet no limit on P/Ms on any of them. Just a simple, "it's the rule" would have been good enough.
As for getting something free and wanting more .....
How much time do you think I've spent on OSO posting projects, reading through posts with the chance I may be able to add something then typing the response out, editing pictures, posting to free hosting and then putting it all together and posting it to the board. Now times that over 2000 times.
Again OSO is lucky to have so many non paying members that contribute. Regardless if its people looking for answers to an issue, people answering those people or just people posting stupid pet videos it's all content and traffic and is why OSO is worth anything and can charge what they do for all those ads over on the side and at the top of the page. So if it was me I would treat non paying members with a little more respect. If OSO could do it with just paying members I wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Keep in mind....I don't believe the Mods get paid...so you might be a toe or 2 out of line when it comes to a cash related complaint.

That's not 100% true. We got $10 Amazon GCs one year. I think that was 2011.

I think she is trying to say that everyone wants to jump on IB about being for profit but when the previous owner ran OSO you got 0 PMs for free.

f_inscreenname 04-01-2015 12:04 AM

I never said anything about Mod's getting paid and know first hand that most if not all don't. Hell even at iboat's forum (a boat store) the Mod's didn't get paid. As I said, I've owned and run forums before and I know the argument is going to be bandwidth and costs and I call BS on it. If it did at all it would cost almost nothing for everyone to have unlimited pm's. As for paying (again if there is any cost), there's a reason OSO can be bought and sold when most other forums, especially boat forums can't. Think about it.
Just call it what it is, an incentive to become a paying member.
Not here to argue over privet messages as I am closing down my own sites and trying to spend less time on-line. Just thought it would make life easier by not having the PM's I send out returned due to another member's full mail box. Half of them are to old members from doing searches. Brought a few members back that hadn't been here in a while. Got a lot of full mail box returns over the years and just think of all the transactions that were missed in the wanted or far sale section. But it is what it is.
If I missed it. Is there a place that you can allow members to direct email. About half the boards I visit when you click on the members name, in their profile there will be a "email" box. Just a link not the address. You guys are using vBulletin there should be a check box to allow it and to allow members to allow it or not.

No, I said that, and my point is this....10 pm's for a nonpaying member is the IB's rule, that is easy to grasp. Haranguing a unpaid mod because she said you're lucky to get 10 because in the old days non paying members got 0 seems a bit over the line....they don't make the rules, they just see that they are adhered to. We all benefit from their free service. Without them the Civil Tone (in posting) as we know it would vanish. You have been here for 10 years so you understand what is what.

As you can see, myself Cash Bar and SpeedGirl are all Charter Members. That means we paid money and invested in the future of OSO 13 years ago.
That was way before any forums were charging anything for any type of membership.
Not to rain on your parade, but we have a combined 30k+ posts of doing the same thing that you do posting on OSO.
We post because we want to, not because we expect something out of it. Its because we enjoy it and enjoy helping other boaters out.

Now we invest our time and do our best to keep OSO running as smoothly as possible.

Nothing in this world is free. IB and OSO are businesses that provide a service in hopes of generating a profit.
Someone would have to pay for the additional data storage eventually.
That could mean an increase to current paying members or an increase for sponsors. I personally don't like either idea.
It reminds me of the way our current federal government is running. I think those that want something should pay or work for it.

And there it is again.... and saying this to a card carrying republican. You really know how to piss someone off. I don't want anything for free (read my posts, I work for and built with my bare hands most everything I have) and for that matter you can keep all of your pm's. Please! Iboats, both Donzi boards, River Daves, Performance boat all have unlimited PM's and OSO don't. Just a fact. I wasn't asking for anything that the other boards don't already do. Just thought you all may want to step into the 2000's and maybe help your member connect better if to only help out the for sale section where I find the most blocked mail boxes. (And what's with not being able to post a picture in that section?)
But I can see you all are circling up the wagons and like a bunch of Libs you are attacking the person instead of defending your position (I went there, how's it feel) so I'm done. Also thanks for pointing out that the time and effort of reading endlessly and posting up 2000 posts over a decade means nothing if I'm not slipping you all a check (now that almost sounds like how Hillary works...hummmmm). I'm sure I could work in a quote from Obama saying "you didn't build that" but again I'm done.

Wow,really dude? The site was the original site, the reason the other sites give away free stuff is becuase they want to be what this site is. You mention stepping into the future a couple times, well in the age of mass communication and every concievable form of communicating with someone is in the palm of your hand, you choose to get upset over the amount of pms a site gives you for free because your an unpaid member and the words from your mouth create value above everyone elses. So why dont you pick up the phone and call, or use email or text, those are certainly more direct and savable from a service you get this pay for. If you want unlimited texting from a cell plan, you pay for it....
