In Ventura Channel in California, 12- to 15-footers moved like giant mountains and—as long as you didn't get stupid and try to launch from them—were kind of fun. (Boat was a 27' Formula.)

Outside Holgate Inlet in New Jersey, cresting and feathering 6- to 8-footers were threatening and could have been big trouble if approached without respect and caution. (Boat was a 33' Donzi.)

On Lake Michigan, 3- to 4-footers gave me the beating of my life. (Boat was 38' Baja.)

I don't know why they call them the "Great Lakes." They should be called the "Downright Rotten and Evil Lakes."
