Herring or Updates Skegs

Curious, what are the differences on the new mercury number six skegs and the herring skegs. On a Straight Bottom Vee Hull what differences will we be seeing in mph and handling? (Projected) Pictures of Swept back and herring skegs are appriciated.

Skegs

Basically the older ones have more
meat to work with, when welding them
etc. They are put on a CNC
machine and does his magic.

A test was run on them in a controlled
environment ( Lake X ). It was on a
cat, Herring's skeg was 3 mph faster.

Apparently they kept swithing the old drives
and Herring's drive's back and forth
to make sure it wasn't a fluke. And every
time Herring's skeg was 3mph faster.

Just what I was told

What is a Herring skeg and what does it look like? Could it be applied to the bravo skeg?

cougarman 09-11-2002 03:31 PM

.

I was told the existing skeg is modified too
make a Herring Skeg, not sure if it is factual,
just what I was told.

The internal housing is remachined after the
welding is done , because it will warp inside a little bit.

Swept Back

Notice the front is cut back on quite
an angle.

Also the back edge is brought
right up to the propeller which also
helps improve handling.

Not the greatest sideview, Trailer is
blocking part of it. Anyway's I think
You get the idea.

You see the Skeg taper's from both
the front and the back.

And you notice the back edge is much
further from the back side of the propeller.

Thanks, pictures are worth a 1,000 words. But is the Herring skeg the same as the swept back?

cougarman 09-12-2002 09:52 AM

.

From what I understand, you can look
at them visually and they are the same.

To check them on a CMM Machine Herring
has a few tricks. :)

To run Herring in the water, supposively
Herring is faster as stated above.
