Stagger Question

I am curious to know what the prop to prop center line is on short stagger . My side by side set up has a 36 inch center line to center line , I believe a full stagger has a 20 inch C/L to C/L . Does any know what that dimension is on a short stagger ?
Rick G.

Unlimited jd 09-26-2015 11:19 AM

I believe full is typically 18-20, short is 22-24

14 apache 09-26-2015 02:11 PM

My 41 apache is 18" And I think short is 24".

Team Archer 09-26-2015 02:42 PM

We have been setting up all of our staggers at 21 Center Lines. Short stagger is as close as you can get we set the motors on the ground to see how close we can get with the length of the engine room.

glassdave 09-26-2015 04:12 PM

how much engine length do you need for a short stagger? I really would like to do some kinda stagger on my 38 Scarab Thunder :D

anyone have any pics of a short stagger setup?

Rick G 09-26-2015 06:22 PM

Dave I know the typical bilge for a full stagger is 100 inches . I am thinking of staggering the a Flat a Deck without losing most of the cockpit so a short stagger may be the way to go . I am thinking I can do it 80 inches or less that way I don't lose too much of the cockpit but as Dan said need to lay out first see just what the fit will be .
RG .

Team Archer 09-26-2015 07:13 PM

It also depends on what drives you plane to run. you can do a full stagger with bravos in 80 inches, speedmasters you need at lease 96 inches short stagger you can gain some room by putting the starboard motor forward but it all depends on your accessories package. I have done it both ways

Dave, my boat that you worked on was a short.

Can't really get much closer with the transom assembly's. I can measure whatever you want. Mine is about as tight as you can get.

Rick G 09-27-2015 12:34 AM

Bck what is the distance from the transom to bulkhead ?
Thanks R G .

That's full stagger, short is when the heads don't overlap from the front engine to the rear

indysupra 09-27-2015 06:32 AM

What kind of boat is that?

I'll be able to measure it in the next couple days

Rick G 09-27-2015 02:00 PM

Thanks bck also if you don't mind can you measure from the front of the lower pulley of the rear motor to the same spot on the front motor .
Cheers RG.

bck 09-27-2015 02:16 PM

The engines are out right now. That's how I can get all the other measurements. The front and rear motor mounts and bellhousings are in it, but no motors.

Rick G 09-27-2015 02:39 PM

Okay how about motor mount distances rear motor to front motor front mount on each motor .
Thanks Rick G.

Yes and no depends what you have to get to. Spark plugs are a whore on the front motor on the out side. And the water pump was bad on the front motor it was mounted on the out side. That will be different this year going to a diesel single stage raw water pump. But every thing else is easy to get to.

Unlimited jd 09-27-2015 08:13 PM

Nothing is more of a whore to work i than a triple 42 o/l, what a fukking pain!!!

bck 09-27-2015 08:16 PM

I can get 6 of the 8 plugs out of the front engine in about 6 minutes, the remaining 2 plugs take about 40 mins. I damn near gave up. Ended up being a 2 person job.

What about the Starboard motor being forward allows one to gain the room over port forward?

Rick G 09-29-2015 06:30 AM

Dan I have 5 drives but no boxes as I notched the hull . Like a bravo , could I do the stagger with the starboard motor left as a plug in ( no short drive shaft ) and port forward and still meet the 80 inch parameter ?

BCK, did you ever post pics of your build/boat? I would like to see it.

Rick from the Merc drawings with the 600 number V staggered the measurement is 94 7/8 inches but that's with a big space between the motor mounts on the front and rear motors. they show just over 60 inches between the front mount on the rear motor to the rear mount on the front motor. I believe that you can tighten that up quite a bit. I have a 42 Fountain here that we rigged with number Vs and its engine room is 81 inches along the top of the outboard stringers and the rear motor is a plugin the rear motor plate on the front motor is 46 1/2 inches from the transom and this boat has a 22 inch center to center on the crank shafts.

Thanks Dan great info . SkaterMike thank you too . Skater could tell me the distance from the front motor mount on the rear motor to the front motor mount on the forward motor ?
That measurement combined with Dans measurement would be money .
Thanks in advance .

I don't have any pics posted on the board anywhere. I have a short video in a thread in the tech section. Rick- sorry I haven't gotten out there to take the measurements yet. I also have V's with a notch.

Ok. I'm coming up with 82 from transom to forward bulkhead, 16 from transom to rear motor mount plate of rear engine, 34 3/4 from rear motor plate of rear engine to rear plate of front engine and 31 1/2 from rear motor plate of front engine to forward bulkhead. Measured as close as I could to crankshaft centerline. I couldn't measure directly on top of the stringers because all the mounts were in the way. It's 53 wide from stringer to stringer. Also just as info I have 67 of cockpit space.

BCK, awesome rig!!! Would love to see it someday, good luck with your engine woes, Gil mentioned you had some heartache, I think you did too.

bck 10-01-2015 10:18 AM

Thanks. Engines are being gone through right now. Would have been done by now but I spent the last 3 weeks looking for blowers and deciding if I could afford them. They won't be blown. Rick- with my engines the first interference you would encounter when trying to get them closer together front to rear would be the front engines bellhousing cooler fittings coming in contact with the rear engines alternator. Not using the cooler on that side would gain a little. Finding somewhere else to mount the alternator would gain more.

Rick G 10-02-2015 06:36 AM

Thanks BCK . Good to know , currently I don't run bell housings with in the integrated coolers so that might be a small advantage and relocating the alternater shouldn't be that difficult . Great info .

Rick IMCO makes a low mount for the alt. that works great its a copy of the original Gentry version. Have use many times. BCK the engine room cleaned up great did you have to repaint it lot better than when we looks at it here in CA.

I painted it with a brush and the Valspar product you recommended and it turned out great. Unfortunately a couple people that worked on it weren't very careful with keeping it clean. I removed all the aluminum and was going to have that redone as well but that "bright" anodizing was a multi step process that would have involved a couple different companies and pretty hefty bill- at least in western ny. It would apparently need to be stripped then polished then reanodized and no 1 company was able to handle it.
