A few months ago I was driving a rental in DC. On one of the expressways on the beltway - traffic slowed and the driver behind me wasn't paying attention and rear ended me. There wasn't any significant damage - but rule #1 is ALWAYS get a police report. I got out of the car - of course traffic is backed up for mile by now-- and asked if this gal was ok - which she was. She immediately said that she had to go pick her daughter up and was leaving. I calmly explained to her that I was calling the police and if she left I had her car license number and I would report that she left the scene of an accident. I was getting a police report. She immediately did the pigeon-head- bob along with the finger twirl and said that I was being disrespectful of her. I politely smiled and said sorry but that's the law!. Police show up a few minutes latter and we fill out the paper work - the officer came to my car and said it was ok for me to leave but the gal that hit me would be there for a while- he said the plate number didn't match the car, she had no proof of insurance, and the registration of the car was in someone elses name. Also, just for the heck of it I called the number that she provided and I got some foreign speaking person - I asked for the gal that hit me and they didn't know who she was.

Don't ever like to learn of an accident - glad that you both were ok -- BUT NEVER EVER think you don't want a police report.

Oh by the way National Car - took all of the information including a copy of the police report and I never heard anything else.

Similar story: 17 yr old girl rear-ends one of my employees, she was texting and traffic stopped short. Chain reaction and 5 other cars were involved. We were car 5 of 6 involved. She had a license but that is about it. Car registration was expired, insurance provided wasn't any good (policy cancelled due to non-payment), car was owned by someone with about 37 letters in their first and last name (we still don't know if it was a man or woman) and lastly the phone number she provided was shortly disconnected after the accident. Car #4 in the accident was totaled (Mercedes R class, doors were pinned shut and it had front/rear damage). We got sued as being the last one in line with insurance. Insurance (Progressive) paid but was trying to weasel out since the employee said he was "done working for the day" and they took that as "off duty" while driving a company truck. Only glitch with that story, he has to return the truck to the warehouse at the end of the day which is where he was going so technically he was no longer working, all stops were done he still had to return the truck and drive his personal car home for the night.

With the popularity of cell phones, I would snap pics of the car, the plate numbers, the vin number and the driver even before the cops arrive!

All this makes you glad most boat wrecks are your fault and nothing but your fault and only involve you and who you have in the boat with you. Definitely good advice guys.

Well she will be in trouble but I hope she recovers OK. She deserves that much. That truck is really messed up. I didn't realize that it rolled several times. Says a lot for the safety of modern vehicles and wearing the seat belt. You'll get a new truck.

Well then again since I have never had one, only a few close calls I guess my "dum" ass would not really know I guess. I have had two car wrecks that were not my fault that almost killed me and put me in the hospital for weeks but what do I know, I have only had boats since I was 8 and I am 49 now....... My point was that cars are right next to you all the time on the road. The only issue I have had with boats is either at night or jet skis/wave runners being too close. To each his own I guess.

I get what your saying. If there is risk... Your putting yourself in it. It's not the risks of some cotton top granny who can't see. When I first say your post I was taken back by what you said as others have. But it's clear that there are risks in powerboating but they are our risks to make. I get it
