I am slightly OCD. I do it on the docks and if the excess is on my boat deck, I will do it there. My idiot friends enjoy uncoiling them shortly after I coil them because they know it drives me crazy...

I coil them up to keep them from being a trip hazard but it never ends up looking as perfectly coiled as that photo. In too big a rush for a beverage I guess.

I don't need to as my wife coils the dock lines.

Don't coil them. if someone can't walk near messy ropes without tripping, shouldn't be on a dock.

I actually make a point to kick them (unless they are on a blow boat)

i have a short set of lines for just such a use, out to dinner or at a transient dock. Either a simple pile or clove hitch, i prefer a clove high or low on the piling and whatever line is left over i will put another clove just above or below it a foot or two with the balance of line . . . .
