used on the trs tailstock so i guess

Looks like the pinion gear moves the shaft below it....the shaft pushes the rudder out...when the wheel is returned to center, the spring above, retracts the rudder back to the retracted ( straight ahead)position.

It's borderline on a Rube Goldberg type of a device ;)

I think it works on opposing rams of sort activated by the rack on the center of the transom. Port turn - port rudder pushes out on the trailing edge and the stb. rudder stays straight like a turn fin.

The bronze age - ding a prop - just hammer it out so it looks good and go- LOL

I think you got it nailed. Looks like that linkage can also pick up a rudder maybe.

Always been a fan of Hickman sea sleds .

I think that rudder system is where the rumor originated that surface drives are hard to maneuver around the dock.
