Is Lake Erie Algae Dangerous To Swim In?

I don't mean when the water is coated with green slime, obviously I'd never swim in that but when we arrive at PIB the water is usually filled with green algae and after a fast 80 mile cruise I like to jump in the water and clean up and freshen up a little before docking at the island. Is this safe? Do you guys swim in this water?

Can't bubble wrap the world. I swim in it, and so does everybody I know. Just don't drink it

I hate to break it to you, but its mid November. Even the algae doesn't like to swim in lake Erie this time of year.

in my entire life on Erie (since I was five) I have seen maybe three snakes total. . . .

nearly every time I go to the bay I stop for a swim by West Sister, the algae isnt all over but in patches.

What's up with the algae?

We swim off the north side of kelleys all the time. If the water is not coated with the algae you r ok.

its caused by fertilizer run off from the farm fields. we have had such a high amount of run off over the last few years that it is still active when it hits the water ways. Its been a double edge edge sword for us in light rainfall years we dont have it so much but the lake is low. With lots of rain comes lots of runoff and as heavily as the farms are subsidized they just throw more on and keep their numbers high.

They grow lots of corn around here.... lots of corn takes lots of fertilizer...

So all that corn that takes lots of fertilizer that causes lots of algae is used to make lots of ethanol....

And all that ethanol tears up our boats as we enjoy our boats less because of all the algae...
