Chicago road conditions after recent snow???

So what are the current road conditions in Chicago? Wet? Melting? Dry? Going to pick my boat up tomorrow at Shogren so I hoping things are dry.

MILD THUNDER 11-23-2015 09:58 AM

Highways mainly dry. But your stuff will get dirty/salty from the melting snow running off the shoulders

JRider 11-23-2015 10:07 AM

Not what I wanted to hear.

We are supposed to get some rain later in the week and will most likely melt it all. May be clear by Saturday? We got close to 5 or so inches in the Laporte / Michigan City area which you would most likely be driving through.

I can't believe Shogren won't street sweep your complete route from his showroom to your house! :D

This was Saturday... I had to pull my new to me 33 threw the storm.

I found a semi truck wash in Wis that washed it all up for me once I was out of the snow.

Just out of curiosity, is he accommodating like that?

Damn, that really sux. Trying to avoid my boat being a salt water boat!:grinser010:

MILD THUNDER 11-23-2015 11:40 AM

Id hold off a couple days , let the rain wash the salt off the roads....

JRider 11-23-2015 11:51 AM

Mild, cant hold off, has to be out tomorrow. Tape the front of the cockpit cover on and dunk the trailer when I get home. Give it a good bath. Then eat crow for giving all the salt water guys ****.

JRider 11-23-2015 12:08 PM

What is a better route? I will be heading west on 94, then what? 90 or 294? I am thinking the skyway might be a little drier?

COOPS 11-23-2015 12:23 PM

You will not avoid the slop. We got hit with almost 16 inches. I am minutes from there new location.

It is supposed to be 54 by the end of the week. Then it will be very messy!!

Shouldn't there be sleds on that trailer?

MrCIG 11-23-2015 02:16 PM

I would have them shrink wrap it all the way down past then chine

Youll want to avoid downtown chicago at all costs, unless you are coming thru at 3am. I would take 94 to 80-94, and 80 west to 294 north. Going thru the city on 94 will pretty much suck. I promise !

$995, and then I would have to unwrap it to winterize.

575cat 11-23-2015 02:56 PM

Wait till spring .

Sydwayz 11-23-2015 02:58 PM

Just ride that ***** up the lake; and pick the trailer up in the spring. I thought this website was for hardcore boaters. :D

Nykamp 11-23-2015 02:59 PM

I've seen more then $ 995 done in clear coat damage from not using the right tape when taping the front edge of the cover down. The right tape is $120 a roll.

northernoffshore 11-23-2015 03:06 PM

does that qualify as salt water use????

ROB FREEMAN 11-23-2015 03:09 PM

theres another ten thousand pot holes to dodge ....

It needs to be out by wednesday, sure as hell will do not want to tow it on the busiest travel day of the year. Had to wait for check to clear to pick it up so here I am now. Shogren moved and has no room for it his new shop, lease is up at his old shop. Was supposed to be picked up 48hrs after the auction so he is actually being nice. Time to get salty. Will dunk the trailer then wash it. Hope it will be dry on the express way. And the boat is 9ft beam...should be fun through Chicago.

As far as the tape, I have 3m tape and gel coat, no paint.

Hopefully you got a galvanized trailer in the deal! :D

ICDEDPPL 11-24-2015 12:18 AM

I drove around all day today my truck didn `t get any salt on it . I don`t think it`ll be as bad as you think. Today roads are clean and dry.

That must suck towing in that mess, how is braking all that mass in the snow?

On the way home, just find a semi truck wash. Im sure you will pass them. I used the Google function on my phone, I found one that was on the way home in Wis, and called them up. (Laughing Larry truck wash) Larry said no problem! Just pull around back and we will open the door for you. Super nice guy!

To boot he only changed me $15!!! said it super Saturday special. I told him it was WAY too cheap here is more., and Larry said any thing more give to the boys out there. So they all wash boys got tips :) The one kid was amazed by the size of the boat. Said" I have never seen a boat this big". Hahaha.

They pressure washed all the snow and road grime crap off the boat n' trailer, washed it all, hand scrubbed the rims n' tires, sprayed it all off and applied hot wax. Once clean I was able to remove the cock pit cover for the remainder of the drive (:( already pulled 2 snaps out on the transom) But the was was well worth every penny.

Braking.... LOL!!!!! you don't brake! More like hope the dumb Chit in front of me see me coming lol..

It sucked to say the least, but i drove nice & easy like grandma on Sunday.. Didn't exceed speed for the road conditions, and always kept a open lane to the right or left of me. 3 lane road in Chicago..... Yep I was in the Center one :)

Knot 4 Me 11-24-2015 08:14 AM

^^^^^^ Sure beats the he!! out of what I had to do several years back after towing my boat from Northern IN back to IL in January in the snow/salt. The roads from my house to my storage were clear and dry so I hand washed the boat/trailer in the driveway with hot buckets of water. The high for the day was 33 degrees!!!

that's Chris's shop in NY

92nsx 11-24-2015 08:44 AM

Also bring a couple cans of WD-40 also . Spray the crap out of any exposed metal / surface rust on the trailer, then the rims, drives ect. I used 1 can alone on the trailer. Every little helps.

joew. 11-24-2015 08:53 AM

I had my 42 pulled from Shogren to Houston tx in February of last year. There was salt and snow on the roads. A quick wash once it arrived and all good. It's a boat guys:)

No offense to Shogren, but I'll bet he isn't paying to shrink wrap the boats he has delivered to him unless it's a mystic or big big money boat.

Watch out on the sky way. Tolls will kill you pulling the boat! For just the truck to cross 1 bridge was $4.50, with a trailer it was close to $20 I took the sky way on the way down and 294 on the way home. 294 tolls wile pulling the boat was $2-4 each, not bad at all. I would take 294 if I were you.

My trip I pd a total of $200-250. in tolls. Just make sure you have cash and coins on you. I think there was only 2 tolls that took check cards.

O ya on the south side of Chicago to enter 294, watch the road signs close!!!! They ( iLL DOT )made it a mess. nothing like taking a 270 degree turn to turn right, chris-cross, ect.

JRider 11-24-2015 10:40 AM

Took the way Mild suggested, free sailing. Roads dry until the last mile. All is well so far, picking up a can of WD40 now a mile from shogren
