Im going to say this once...
Some of you guys know what I do for a living, Im a hospice case manager. I watch people die for a living as ironic as that sounds. I listen to death bed confessionals day in and day out. Nobody has ever said "damn I should have fought that internet war harder!" What they do talk about is the good times they had, the full lives they lead, the drunken jackassery,
This is about boats, about friends, about cold beverages on a hot afternoon, its about good food, fountain slanks and other women of questionable morals and low self esteem, its about laughing, its about writing cum dumpster on the forehead of the guy who passed out on B dock with a sharpie.... Its about laughing your ass off at the drunk guy who feel in off the swim platform trying to cross the raftoff to his boat...its about being that guy next week. I watch 20 year old kids die from cancer, I watch 95 year old men die from heart failure what matters is the good times..... Make good times, its why we are here, We now return you to your regularly scheduled jackassery, |
good stuff bud, sorta puts things in perspective.
|
Nobody on their death bed ever said "Goddammit! I wish I had worked a few more weekends".
|
Couldn't have been said better.

I agree bud.
My mom before her accident and passing was also in hospice as well and always told me to live without regrets and always have fun. Work to live not live to work. Could be over tomorrow. |
As i always say Y O L O
|
And I'd like to say thank you to you and all the people who work for hospice. It takes a special person to do what you do. My grandfather passed a couple years ago at the age of 90 and lived a full life. He was a special ops soldier in the OSS during WWII. He was my father figure growing up. He helped me learn a love for the outdoors, which I am an avid waterfowler, and also a love for the water through pleasure boating and fishing here on the st. Lawrence. I can't say anything more in favor towards hospice. They helped my grandfather be as comfortable as he could be in his final days. Again, thank you to all who work for hospice and do what you do!!
And to add to your point, save for a rainy day but live life to the fullest and don't let off the throttle cause you never know when it's over!! Cheers!! |

What a difficult job Rob .......... God Bless them all, Thank you for what you do to make the end a better place.........
p.s. Perfectly timed for all the b.s. of late on here, hopefully this will help people put their priorities in perspective ............ Bill |
Very well said and this especially hits home for me having lost my mother just 2 weeks ago. She was in hospice and they were amazing. Thank you for all that you do, I see you are from Toledo and so am I, maybe you and I have crossed paths?
Thanks again |
Well Said Phragle.
I've been a volunteer EMT for 26+ years now and just last night had a call that had me thinking the same thing. Never take anything for granted and never pass up an opportunity you may not get again. Don't fret the small stuff, spend time with those you want to be with, and enjoy life to the fullest because it may be gone tomorrow. |
Now, if only the right people would read and heed this thread.
|
Health, happiness, prosperity is the way go; life is fleeting.

This really hit home. I watched my beloved brother die a year and a half ago. End stage cancer. He was not conscious when we got to the hospital. I literally watched him die when life support was stopped. Treasure every moment we are alive because it could be the day we die. These forums are for sharing knowledge, helping one another, making friends and passing some time in a pleasant way. I get the feeling I missed something though.

Amen to this. On Jan 7th I was diagnosed with a 90% blockage in the widow maker. I was pretty much asymptomatic but having an aggressive personal doctor and referral to an equally aggressive cardiologist caught my disease before it killed me. Only 51 years old and no real family history of heart disease. Had a 4 vessel CABG on Jan 11th and now well on my way to a full recovery. Very lucky I just didn't drop dead of a massive heart attack. Puts a new perspective on life.

Not to jack the thread, but maybe add to the sentiment...
Quote from a recently lost cancer patient.. The things I used to worry about or obsess over, I know they’re just meaningless. Time is the most precious currency we have. You never know when your time is up. You have to take advantage of every moment you have with your friends and family and loved ones because that can be taken away in an instant. Everything else can be replaced. http://www.muscleandfitness.com/feat...-real-strength I am taking my lovely wife for double mastectomy, lymph node removable, and full reconstruction tomorrow morning. We are expecting the best, but this is from seemingly perfect health 3 weeks ago. You never know what the day will bring when you get up in the morning, As I get older, my idea of what is really important is definitely changing. |
nsformula, I met and fell in love with a woman who had gone through what your wife is now experiencing 15 years ago on Valentines Day. She showed me her reconstructed breasts so that I would understand, and I told her that they were as beautiful as the rest of her. She is the second love of my life only because my first love died a year ago. Love your beautiful wife for her incredible courage. God bless you both. It will turn out OK.
|
Well said. Thank you for what you do, your help to not only the patients but to the family's is immeasurable.

Make good times, its why we are here, It looks like we are talking about life here. I say this to everyone reading. What we do and how we act is our own choice---of which I have made my own dirt stuff, and I have read all the responses here so far, and I see several that have agreed have “liked” what has been said by Phragle. In 1982, my girlfriend had about a 2 week illness and then suddenly died unexpectedly. She had a very rare form of cancer….sarcoma of the trachea. She was only 21 years old. It devastated me—messed me up bad. I was angry at the world and at God for about 6 years. It was a time that I made some very bad decisions in my life rolling in the mud. I know most (if not all) of those reading this may not like or agree with my input concerning the theme of this thread, but I am approaching it in the most honest way I know how….I genuinely love my fellow man. Here’s at least one thing that the bible says about death…. “Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. Death is the destiny of every man and the living should take this to heart.” Ecclesiastes 7:2 Life is short and precious. Funerals are about the only time it gets a living person’s attention about life and death….obviously, most of us do not know the moment when we are going to die, but we will die….and now---while we are still alive---is the time we really need to think about where we are going to spend eternity. God loves you/us and He is for you---not against you---and He has a will, plan and purpose for your life---a better plan than what you have for your own life. Jesus already paid the price in full for you on the cross---in your place---so that you would not have to go to hell (the second death), but instead could have eternal life in heaven. It is a gift---freely given---to you….paid for in full by Jesus Christ. Why?---because He loves you! Your part is to admit you are a sinner, repent from your sins, and surrender your life to your Creator Who loves you---His name is Jesus, the Nazarene. All of God’s blessings to you all. |
If I repent will he stop blowing up my engines as part of his plan for my life?

Well said...

Thank you for doing what you do…unfortunately that is the kind of world we live in and it is a part of life. I am not sure I could do what you do myself …and I understand wanting to do something fun during your off/spare time. I think we can all relate to that. I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and boating is one of the things I enjoy.

I just had a step sister last month in Hospice.....she lasted 50 hours there and passed at 40 years old. She was walking around fine 10 days earlier, had just moved into a new apartment the day she was first hospitalized. I couldn't imagine being dead at 40.....

Phragle, Bud... Glad that you posted your thoughts. My Dad passed away in early December. While we knew his time is not long we still delayed a few things. And so did he. Everyone thinks there is more time, until there is none. I need to talk to you one of these days, just to get some input from your experience regarding Moms issue. She has Alzheimer's (among other medical issues) and probably a short time as well. To the rest of the peeps in the world; I never regretted anything I done. No matter what was the outcome. Live and learn, but live. I only regret things I did not do. Several people I knew or knew of just passed away suddenly. And on that thought, I will go in the bilge, do a little work and as soon as I won't freeze my a$$ off, boating we will go. (BTW, my Dad loved boating, he was the happiest on the water) :)

No post I have seen on this forum has been this relevant and, in my case, timely. Phragle, your comments hit the mark and how we should enjoy the short time we are on this rock. In the past three months we have had three friends pass away, all in their 50's. We are both 51, so reality is a *****. Last night another good friend's father passed away. He was in hospice for a short time, so I appreciate those who help families in their time of need.

This is the first thread in quite a while that has my undivided attention. While I feel lately my life has been blessed with little tragedy, I know some day I will deal with another loss of a loved one. As others have said "live today as if it's your last".... Thanks Phragle for bringing us all back to what really matters. Peace on brother!

My wife is a hospice nurse. She say's that seeing an older person pass is tough enough, but seeing the younger ones are tougher. Cancer & other diseases do not discriminate when it comes to age. So, waiting for the right time to do something may never come. Don't be shy to hug, kiss, and tell your loved one's "you love them".
on a lighter note, when will this winter end? |
I'm really not here to try to win an argument...just highlighting the truth according to God's Word for those who are searching for the real true answer to life.
Speaking of "deeds" .... We cannot pay or earn our way to heaven by being a "good person", or by doing "good works or deeds or nice things" or by being a kind person....all of that is good, but sadly it is not good enough to get you or anyone into heaven. If it all it took was to being a good person and doing good deeds, then Jesus would not have had to come down from heaven and shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins and die the most hideous death on the cross. Only Jesus has the power to forgive you of your own sins. No matter how good or nice or kind you are, you are still born a sinner. If you are thinking and believing that somehow you are going to enter heaven by your "good deeds" outweighing your "bad deeds"....if that is what you are counting on, then sadly you won't make it. The name "Jesus" means "Savior". The word "Gospel" means "Good News". It is the "Good News" because Jesus paid for our sin debt in full. It is/was a free gift from Him so that we could have eternal life, but it is our part to believe and to choose to invite Jesus into our life. "For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not." Ecclesiastes 7:20 It doesn't matter if you are Hitler or a Housewife----If you miss heaven by an inch, then you may as well have missed it by a mile. The world will tell you that "there are many roads to heaven" , but truthfully (according to God's Word) there is only one way to heaven. Jesus said; "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Me." John 14:6 Life is short, precious and unfair....we live in a fallen world and that is why so many bad things happen. Jesus is our only hope of salvation, but it is our own individual choice to believe in Him and invite Him into our life. "I call heaven to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants." Deuteronomy 30:19 In the verse above, God gives us a choice....life and death. It's like God is giving us a test, and then He actually tells you what the correct answer is to the test question because He's on your side and wants you to WIN---to LIVE for eternity in heaven! |
