Default Seatek

Well, maybe Seatek diesels for offshore racing applications are just a legend then for all practical purposes.

Like the Lamborghini V12s of old…

IMO: The chosen engine builder "s" since start of this project, both well known in the light duty truck diesel performance world, each gravely under estimated the requirements at hand. First one bailed out quickly with no clear plan for an actual marine diesel platform. The second one failed to heed my advice not to take on the job, while checking out one of my yet untested engines at a diesel truck event. Stated "wasn't a big deal, cause he builds 2000+ hp diesels every day..." I attempt to explain he was out of his league for what is expected. While he just chuckled and walked off. Tyson destroyed his first two attempts in mere minutes of runtime as we know. And a couple attempts later, he's gone too. Cocky is wrong attitude to start with in this type of endeavour. Respect, and begging for bones from those who hold the records, ie FB and a couple others old timers, is how I chose to approach the task.

A couple summers back, I get Tyson together for a set down with the only US based marine diesel engine builder I knew of that could possibly accomplish such task. Using the same platform currently installed. A small company where a Fabio Buzzi Design poster hangs right outside the owners office. If you have ever been there, you understand. And after a nice tour and a long chat, they weren't onboard. Not for lack money or ambition, but solely based on two decades of in house R&D. Simply put, they didn't feel the requested power levels was reliable for the small displacement they currently build. Just won't last at that expected power level for extended periods.. Again, much respect is due for an honest answer. Especially from someone who shares a deep respect for Tyson's other accomplishments and design work in the marine industry. It's a very small niche market, with one Goliath and only a few Davids left standing. Far better to offer support and share a little knowledge, when the very few involved are each shooting for similar lofty goals.

That said, I congratulate Tyson on his accomplishments to date. Respect him taking a step back to focus on his new family. But will totally be first in line to bust on him for not updating everyone on here for 3 freaking years...

They did.

A friend of mine had 4 at one point, and while not outboard trouble free, they were quite reliable for what they were.

But try to get some today.

I've forgotten, what transmissions you are running Jay? Single or 2sp ZF's behind those?
Also have any performance numbers to share yet? Trying to gauge some power, weight, and RPM comparisons among the current diesel projects.

I'm at 91mph on 34x18's best GPS recall to date. Tyson is a little over 100 on 40x18's if memory is correct. So am curious how these small cubic inch / high rpm feeding #6's, stack up against the best engine / drive combo of the group.

Main point stressed to me by the legendary diesel racers, shaft speed vs prop diameter. Which ultimately equates to final slip on cleavers. Tyson and I are both stuck at 1.15:1 final drive ratio and 18" diameter unless we chop off the cav plates. You however can overcome both of those limit very easily.

PS. These guys are gaining ground in the diesels quickly. Best powertrain combo for certain, but I have yet to see an actual GPS #. Have a buddy there now, but haven't convinced him to take a ride yet. Something about drowning would ruin his vacation he keeps saying. But they claim top boat is running at 200kph, while others state it's only 120kph. Either way, one of us is going to have to ship a boat over, and show em how's it done.. I'd love to make a pass down that river in something 40'...
