i don't go out in big water its not fun to me. but if i drop the boat off my lift idle out 100ft and head east the first thing ill hit is Portugal...... there is probably some decently rough water out there....

phughes69 03-23-2016 10:50 PM

How long did it take you to dry out the boat after that ride? And how many fillings did you loose?

You have to build them tough to last around here. Mine happens to be build in 1972 and still around so it fits the bill.

I would also like add, lake erie is a bad b*tch!

Ive never been on Erie, but hear that it can be wild because of the wind and shallow depth. I went down to the Lost Peninsula near Toledo to look at a boat and was surprised to see the the whole area had HUGE seawalls along the Ottawa River because the wind blowing across will make the water level go up and down 4 feet.

It's a heavy boat built by Allmand.with a rounded keel. It prefers rough water. Maybe not that bad but it don't like flat water at all. To be honest I don't think we got wet at all. The guy that took the picture said we would go down and disappear under the wave tops then she would climb right back up the next wave like in the picture and back down again.
There was one time. A lot of years back I was about in the same exact place when a rain squall / microburst came up the channel. It was like looking at the end of the world coming at you and being my boat ramp was on the other side of it running away was just going further away from home and into open water. Put the life jacket on and waited for it to come. Tunneled a couple waves just trying to keep it pointed into the wake (wake started coming from all angles after it started to bounce of the shoreline down both side of the channel). 20 minutes of pure hell but we came out of it wet but intact. I get back to the ramp and then home and as I pull up the wife looks a little overlay excited to see me. She tells me that the storm was all over the news. It flipped a water taxi in the Inner Harbor killing a bunch of people and when she couldn't get ahold of me (due to my wet phone) she called the coastguard. From that day on it was my true love. I've had sleeker and I have faster but there is none better for where I live.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that an Apache is the boat that all others (except for maybe Cigarette's) aspire to be.:party-smiley-004:

Yea, I got caught between Destin and Gulf Shores trying to get back when a storm came up. I don't think the water was that big but it was a miserable ride back to say the least. It was fun for the first 15 minutes, after that not so much. Just wanted to get back.

Same thing in my PowerPlay, no bone jarring hits, wonderful hull for the slop.

I boat mostly in Long Island Sound, one of the best waters for boating IMO. Usually fun slop during the summer, however during the dog days of late July-early August it gets flat as a pancake at times. However it kicks up plenty when it feels like it, for instance when all the contestants turned around during last years's Don Aronow run.

I'm guessing not much of this on the Great Lakes.

That's the only "big water" I've personally been in on my boat, lol.

Everyone leaving Harmon on Poker Run weekend at once when a rain storm blows in or at the end of the day.

I actually got a ticket years ago for going counterclockwise on a small lake. Cop was a total prick! I had never heard of that law!!

MonkeySea2 03-24-2016 11:31 AM

I got caught on the Chesapeake Bay once when a storm rolled in. They come in very fast there! I was able to barely outrun it back to the ramp but we were completely leaving the water and airing the prop out. And when I looked back at my buddies boat, all I would see is the full bottom. That was exciting.

Belleair302 03-24-2016 12:11 PM

Down here in Florida so long as your boating is done during the summer by 4 pm you should miss any bad weather, and I a talking about mid July until mid Oct.....the wet season. Otherwise it is often very calm with a gentle 2-4 ft of movement even 25 miles out. As ever it depends upon wind more than tide.

Then there is big water racing....bring back those days of glory.

3pointstar 03-24-2016 12:19 PM

[QUOTE=MonkeySea2;4420192]I actually got a ticket years ago

We do 98% of our boating on an inland lake -- in fact - back in the day - when we had 9 planets I swam across it a few times. I was stopped (with a brand new boat) and was asked to see the fire extinguisher, life preservers, and clean air spark arrestor - which we had 100%. I was then asked how long the boat was -- 18'. I was told that I needed to have a flare warning device -- which I didn't have -- heck I could yell to shore if anything like that happened. It seemed to me it was like a $40.00 fine. It doesn't have to make sense it's a regulation.

3pointstar.

Belleair302 03-24-2016 12:25 PM

With so many classic car events now happening maybe it is time to organise a classic boat series with different categories to run together.

We just tried to do just that 2 weeks ago in Sarasota. Lot's of interest, actual boat count low.

If someone puts one together and really works at promoting it for next winter, we have some members who are interested and would support it.

Belleair302 03-24-2016 12:44 PM

Regional media coverage, web chatter, word of mouth, are all needed as is peer pressure. No event starts perfectly but given a good run if you are doing the event next year it will grow. get the word onto the web and into the media channels and away you go.

Awesome Story!
What is the power and speed of your Allmand?

How would the rounded keel help in the rough stuff?
