Ive been out in that water in everything from a 23ft single stuffing the bow so hard , bilge pumps ran for 15 minutes , blew the microwave out of the cabinet, cracking ac freon lines, cabin doors falling off and what not in my 40 formula. Took waves over the deck exiting diversey harbor in my 40 excalibur heading out for the day. Lost factory sunpad cushions that were glued and lag bolted down, hitting so hard coming back from sbi races after a storm. Its all part of boating on the great lakes.
All of my boats were pleasure budget boats, that couldnt hold a candle to most of that hardware in that run. My point regarding the wave heights, was that I know from experience, 3-4's are rough! 4-6's even more so. But when i see guys claiming the lake was 10's , I call bs. I also call bs when i hear guys say how they run 80mph in 4 footers like nothin in their 32 . Did they play "Steel Magnolias " for a warm up video before leaving the docks? I think i heard someones JL audio speakers cranking "wind beneath my wings " by bette midler in that video of them idling out the channel |

The NOAA bouy you reference was in Little Traverse Bay and had some exposure to the NE winds but not as exposed as where the channel opens up into the lake. It was especially bad with 6ft + within a mile or so of the shoreline as the water piled up. Once clear of the coast and in deep water I would say seas were 4 to 6 ft until you made the turn and started down into Traverse Bay and seas became progressively less the farther south you got. I find no fault with anyone who chose to turn around. Captains decision whether for safety, concerns about the comfort of his crew, not wanting to beat the crap out of a new boat whatever. I can tell you that everyone had a blast on Saturday if they went out on the lake or not. There were fun runs on Thursday and Friday and of course the camaraderie of socializing with their boating friends and raising money for 2 very worthy charities. Boyne Thunder is at the top of my favourite events.

I should say I am just breakin balls a little bit. Theres a good chance I would have turned back myself, esp if the mrs. Was on board. She doesnt like that water.
Just a little teasing. Dont need the poker run circuit putting a hit out on me! Looked like a great event as always , with awesome hardware. |

Forgive me if I'm wrong as I don't know that run, so don't know if that vid was the start or not, but assuming it was as I saw many boats twice in the vid, once heading out and once returning. Wow............. |

We ran out about a mile or so and turned around(had 4 women on board) and when we were about 1/4 mi outside of the pier there were numerous times that when in the trough of a wave we couldn't see anything but water around us and there were times that you could only see the top of a center console. They were realistic 6+ out in front of Charlevoix. It was big water no doubt...not LOTO water, but it was big.

These two photos need to be edited together for a desktop background, the best of old vs. new v-bottom offshore wave crushers. Love it! :champs: |

LOL! Yeah, they have no idea...... I wonder if any LOTO folks ever wondered why people don't put floating docks actually on the lake in Lake MI.

However, I can't blame anyone for going, either. It's a lot of fun if you can get into the right set of water and waves and get the boat set to run in it. As long as you don't break down. A long idle in that water, and nobody will have any food they have eaten in the last week left in their bodies. |

Any pics of the 36 Apache with the Indian feathers on bow?
|
Lake Huron which can hurt you as badly as Lake Michigan scared me to the point where I was praying. It was the biggest water I've ever seen and never want to be in again. The waves crashed over the north wall of the sanilac marina for 48 hours, there were white caps inside the marina! Like idiots we decided it was time to leave and that lake and our bad choice almost killed us. It happens real fast.

Even though boats didn't run, still bummed it's the first Boyne I missed in 5 years. I'm lovin' all the awesome photos Nice work, as always, Pete. And some sweet Go Pro videos.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my posts. Sounds like some guys are taking them seriously.
My apologies to the boyne participants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iAzMRKFX3c |
