Awful news. Godspeed to those souls. Terrible to lose people from our small community of performance boaters, and yet another black mark on the reputation of our sport. Reading the comments on the news articles is infuriating.

BUP 07-15-2016 11:13 PM

Sorry to hear this and prayers for the families.

As it was mentioned no Life Jackets on and high rate of speed. I have no idea if these statements are 100 % true.

Sorry to have to bring this up. Not to sound or make matters worse - I just talked about this **** Life jackets and kill lanyards**** in another thread up here and still lost why boaters do not wear them, - Along with how many every time they go out check that your kill switch works properly plus attach your lanyard. No one commented about what I posted. IMO any boat 65 mph or over, everyone should have jackets on. Sorry for the comments but I am firm believer in this.

Again sorry to bring this up and very sorry about this tragedy.

DRAG 07-15-2016 11:20 PM

So sad :(

We followed these folks for quite some time at LOTO this past August while admiring his boat and he was absolutely a safe traveler on the water. Jumping to conclusions about what happened doesn't help. So sorry for their family and friends.

I think this is the best time to talk about things like Lifejackets. Lessons like this are written in blood and the pain needs to be real for people to take it seriously. I don't think its disrespectful to learn from accidents, in fact I think the opposite. If I were to die in a way that could have been avoided I would want people to learn form my mistakes.

Crashes like this are absolutely horrible and as sad as can be. But we need to learn from them. Year after year there are deadly accidents at boat events and still I see so many people moving fast in boats without simple life saving devices.

So I second Jrider, Please Please wear life jackets out there. So many reasons why they help. at a minimum it could make the recovery easier.

RIP.......

Mike

i kindly disagree with the timing but we are all entitled to our opinion

Cat & Mice 07-15-2016 11:42 PM

Nate, I apologize if I offend or make matters worse.

I did not know these people, I am sure its easier for me to be disconnected from the feelings that people are going thru. I am a pilot and spend a lot of time on crash forums so I am sure that has also desensitized me, again sorry.

I just go right into understand what happened mode and try to learn from it. I also have no idea what happened and for all I know they had life vest on. I know from experience that when details and facts come out its always very different that we thought in the beginning.

Condolences to everyone involved.

Mike

I'd suggest that, once more details are known, a second thread be opened for lessons learned. As I recall we have done this in the past on OSO and it has allowed for both respect to the deceased and their friends / family and for a fruitful discussion about what can be done to avoid such incidents in the future.

RIP

We all respect our boats and the way we operate them but the near impossible can still happen. It doesn't matter how far removed you are from this tragedy, it still hurts to read about it.

Life is so fragile, sincere condolences to everyone who is affected by this loss.

Jon.

I can't even fathom the horror that ha just begun for these two couples families.

Gives me the chills to think of how many times I've ridden in someone else's boat or run our boat with my wife and friends and enjoying the day. You don't ever think it will come to a sudden and tragic end. Horrible.

from AJC.com

The bodies of Melissa Renee McMahan, 45, of Mount Washington, Ky., and Tammy Reece, 44, of Columbia, Ky., were located after an overnight search, officials with the Department of Natural Resources said Saturday.

Two men are still missing, DNR officials said. They have been identified as Arthur Gene McMahan Jr., 46, of Mount Washington, Ky. and Anthony Reece Jr., 44, of Columbia, Ky.

Go hug and kiss your wife and kids and laugh hearty with your friends and tell those in your life how much they mean to you and soak up and appreciate every last ounce of this life. Then, while you're alone and out having a beer next to your boat, give it a little rub on the bow and ask it to take care of you as you will respect and take care of it. ;)

This is the news we never want to hear. Condolences to all involved.

Nate,I would have to disagree with you on this one, Jrider is correct. The poker run is continuing today so lets make sure everyone is geared up for the event.I always wondered why true offshore jackets were not a requirement as they are in any open offshore raceboat.

Not even going to engage about who thinks what is right or wrong right now.

If you feel the need to do so I ask to please open another thread about it.

Dont know any of the victims but we're all boaters and 1 big family. Thoughts and prayers to the families and friends. Hope they can gain some solace in the fact that they passed on doing what they loved. Accidents can and do happen. Be safe out there.

So sad, not only a loss to the powerboating community as a whole but a huge loss to our Lake Cumberland boating community.

beaver 3 07-16-2016 04:00 PM

Art was also known around these parts for his love of drag racing and his family / friends from that sport. i didnt know him personally but through friends of friends in both boats and cars. i have never heard any thing but positive about him.

ive floated with anthony in front of the damn in lake cumberland. he didnt know me from anywhere but had no problem talking shop with a complete stranger. and was not worried about a much lower class of boat being next to his. just a solid good person.

god speed to the boaters involved. thankfully they were doing what they loved at the time of being called up.

Makes you think having the tether cord on your wrist doesn't even cover you as much as we think it does. Godspeed to the 2 couple out having the best times.. Prayers and condolences from our boating family

rchuntlsl 07-16-2016 06:28 PM

Sad to hear. We know Anthony just from hanging around with him some at poker runs and rafting up. I was sad to hear this news. They were pretty awesome people. At the lake Cumberland poker run Anthony was one of the first on the scene when Brad Smith crashed. I know he just got in there and pulled one of the guys out of the water when that Skater crash happened. He and the others will be missed by the boating community.
