prop locks or something..
 

hey everyone,

i'm about to get a boat with twins and i'm worried about my props walking off at the marine.. I have done some searching and the only thing I keep seeing popping up are the McGuard locks..after reading some reviews, people commented that they have lost their props after these locks back off while boating.

so what are people using to secure their props and or outdrives. I did see some cool bars that look like bars that wrap from the back of the outdrive to the front of the prop and wraps into that. then locks but most companies have stopped making them..

Had mcguard locks on my twin 454 bravo 1 boat with no problems for 5 years and now have mcguard locks on my ssm 3 drives on my cigarette and doing good for the last 2 years. Now that I'm posting this I'll probably loose one tonight lol

I had the best solution when I kept the PP on the trailer at the marina...I took them off.

If someone wants those things they're history no matter what, it took me 5 minutes and they were both off and safe at home. Did it each time, small price to pay for the security. I also had my gps mount fabricated by a plastics place so that some velcro held it in when it was in its mount (totally recessed and not visible), I took that out each time I left the boat at the marina. That one took me about 30 seconds to pull out.

The asswipes can't take what's not there.

did you use any type of locking fluid, or just put them on a left them.

very true.. I will be launching and recovering each time I go out I would say once a week.. I didn't want it possibly mess up anything doing that so much.

The boat I bought came with the McGuard locks and I have had 2 years with no issues so far. I would bet lost props are due to incorrect install. The McGuard setup removes the hex nut and due to this the locking tab washer. In it's place is a belleville washer to stop the prop nut from backing off. Not installing it or improper directional install can allow the prop nut to back off.

Eight years using McGard's with no issues. They keep the honest man honest... the purpose of all locks according to my father.

I always use the mcguard locks by themselves no locktite or anything. Only thing I have done is if I'm testing props and taking them on and off a bunch of times in a day I'll use the regular nuts and not the locks cause they have the nylon thread lock in the locks that you can wear out by taking them on and off to many times. I only need my locks for when my boat is left on the lift for weeks at a time but I do agree with Indy in the fact it's always better to take the props off if your on the trailer.
