The hour meter WILL record hours with just the key on, the motor WILL NOT. With that said, all the boats I've owned had the stereo wired hot, so no need to turn the key on to use the stereo.

When you turn the key, listen carefully to the hour meter, you will here a little click every 10th of an hour.

Yes.

Check the scan for the engine number, make sure it is the engine that is in the boat. Simple.

Engine numbers are sometimes hard to find, let alone photograph. He should also have some registration, coast guard documentation or even insurance papers that show the engine number. If you're agreeing a sale 'unseen' make sure it is written on the contract, "subject to and conditional upon verification of engine number".

You should have no problem, all sounds genuine to me, in which case he will understand your cautious nature.

Good luck!

This is also true of PCM 555 used on the 496

I have my truck driver delivering steel 1/2 hour away from there on September 6 and he'll have some time to kill. If you don't make a deal and are still interested then let me know and i'll have him stop over for a look. He's not a boat guy but he is a mechanical guy.
