Almost ran over a unlit kayaker couple miles off the beach one night in the Gulf in my parasail boat .
I was doing maybe 20 mph on a fairly clear night with not another set of vessel lights in sight.
I never even saw him, only just as he passed by my quarter by about 3 feet .i never stopped.

I don't understand how this could happen. I understand that the ferry might not have been able to see them. But how could they not see the ferry in time to move to a safe distance. It's not like the ferry is doing 30 knots. Or did they think they had the right away and the ferry would go around them?

Actually, quite a few of those commuter ferries move very fast. Some are catamarans with big diesel power and Arneson drives. Those don't just cross the river, rather they travel a fair distance up and down the Hudson River and surrounding, making them truly commuter, vs. just crossing the river.
