Need a machinist

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nname/4_11.jpg

I have these two V-drive shafts that either needs to be repaired or replaced. They are out of round or one has a slight bend in it. I can’t really figure it out being it is slight and all I have is a dial indicator and a couple old bearings to work with. I did figure out that when gear lash is set proper half a turn it’s normal and the other half it mashes the gear teeth together.
The shafts are 8 and 11 inches and little less than 2 inches in thickness at its widest point. Who has a CNC machine or a 3D printer (lol) they are itching to work with?

General propeller out of Bradenton use to straighten all my 12 foot long inboard prop shafts, and get them perfect.

Give them a call and tell them what you got .

How hard are the shafts? Can you knick them with a file?

If you cant find anyone to remake them I can do it for you, I own a cnc lathe and mill!!

Check them with a hardness tester. They are most likely hardened, you would have to machine, heat treat and then grind to size.

I don't think they are hardened being they can be dented pretty easy. They are Stainless steel though.

depending on how bad the shafts are you could have the gears pressed off...then have a machinist check the shafts and possibly straighten ...they could also do a hard chrome plate and then grind straight again...

Are those out of a Casale Gearbox?

f_inscreenname 09-07-2016 12:41 PM

Wally,
Sorry about that, the gears come off easy enough I just didn't have a picture with them off. How much can chrome add? I'm thinking one is off by .008 or something but I could be wrong (+ or -). They look really simple. Just is I don't do it or have the tools. Like I said someone with a CNC or such machines could do it in seconds from what I see on you tube.

Bob, yes it is. One looks standard Casale but one shaft is totally custom. I have spoken to them in the past and would prefer to use them as a last resort. The shafts are nothing they have off the shelf and would have to custom make them anyway.

PS, some of the measurements would need to be changed but only by thousandths if making new.

I work in a shop here in Ohio and could get you a quote as long as you know mat'l and if they need to be hardened or not? Also if they need to be ground and what kind of tolerances you are looking for.

Any two stroke crankshaft rebuilders in your area? They would have truing stands and tools/skills necessary to straighten you out.Good Luck!!!
