I will say this................... you can take a car with MS3pro and I'm talking something bad-a$$ and you can drill the throttle in neutral and it won't go past the rev-limiter..... I know this because I had a customer who forgot to set the 2-step and he was going to show how well it worked. Only thing was, he forgot to put the clutch in so instead of 4500rpm it went to 7800 rpm.......... and hung there.
I'm not saying I have all of the answers for every scenario but I'm saying this ecu is light years ahead of whats in most marine applications right now excluding the MoTec which is also very very good. I could do GPS mph with timing control, not with throttle control (but you can't close an electronic throttle faster than I can pull timing) |

Personally I would not want the added heat on the exhaust valves ETC. The rev limiter if it has a sloo rate that would be my choice. This is only my thoughts and what I see will work good in a offshore boat. I had bought 7531 MSD boxes with the rev limiting sloo rate and they where junk. 1 lasted a hour and stopped sparking. After about 2k I put 7al-2plus back in.

Id probably look into some tucker valve seats for this build.
What is the estimated, or expected time between freshen ups? Looking forward to the results. Always good to see new builds come together. |

Without a transducer of some sort I have no way of directly reading torque though. What I can show is RPM, throttle position, timing, mph (if we have a speed output available) engine vacuum, crankcase vacuum, oil temp, water temp, fuel pressure, injector pulse width, drive gear oil temp (if we can put a sensor on it) and anything else you can put a sensor on with a 0-5V out. I have not done this yet but with the right software manipulation you can show accurate fuel consumption, volumetric efficiency, calculated hp and tq, etc. There are features I've never used yet but may look into. |

Hard to say to be exact about the freshen up process timeframes but of course like everything and anything, close monitoring and hopefully catching it before any major issues, |
Please do NOT waste money on ANY drive that still uses junk XR gears. (Imco sc, Bmax lower, teague platnium, max machine, AADS, etc). The SC lower XR gears will pit and send metal through the beautiful upper. So plan on Freshening the SC lower every season while inspecting and cleaning the metal out of the upper.
At least go with a full SCX upper and SCX lower with a MDC Drive Guardian for rough water protection, the minimal speed lose will be worth the strength. But..... by the time you do it right the other options start looking really good. The ONLY benefits of the full SCX are less expensive props and it might be easier to dial in. My Vote is X-POWER, at least give Bill a call he's a GREAT guy to chat with 40k........ SCX upper SCX lower (17k), Imco transom assembly & steering (10k), Imco extension box(3k), WCM blueprinted lower(4k), upgraded X-Power Stainless Gimbal Ring (3k), drive guardian(3k), reservoir. 48K......X-Power (35k), Imco transom assembly & steering(10K), Imco extension box(3k), X-Power Stainless Gimbal ring included 60k.......Arneson ASD8, Bam 1350, custom extension box to house transmission, steering & trim included 60K......Mercury #6, ITS Transom assembly, Bam 1350, custom extension box to house transmission 25K......Arneson ASD7M, Bam1350, Ext Box, trim, steering, etc. is a better choice then the SCX-4 if you want to spin offshore style props, and actually less expensive. Please don't take offense but its pointless to build such a SWEET boat with a BADAZZ engine, and then skimp on the drive??? Plus there's a serious safety factory to consider, you will be making a TON of torque rigged into a nice hull that can handle the power, the last thing you want is to break something and spin out...... The ASD7M and SCX really are NOT strong enough for your application and are NOT rated for your power output.......(get it in writing over a sales pitch over the phone) ***Prices are estimates but give a good idea of how fast it adds up*** Again thanks for sharing both your build threads with us, they are what make OSO great! |
Watching vacuum is going to be way too slow. Give Mike at MDC (Drive Guardian) a call. I was on his boat during some of the data logging testing with and without his product, the torque spikes that destroy the drives are in milliseconds and the big spikes occur in the midrange just cruising.

The imco drive should accept a standard bravo based drive guardian.
Mike at mdc can explain the dynamics of what takes place as far as torque spikes when the prop breaks free. He has data logged information from torque measuring sensors on the drivetrains. |
