i understand that, documentation has nothing to do with any taxes at all... documentation is registering your boat with the coast guard. that is it. any taxes due on boat or personal property is the owners responsibility. some states will make registration less as it saves them paperwork.

No personal property on watercraft tax in Virgina Beach.

And yes, understood in regard to sales tax.... rather minimal in Virginia (at least from the cheap seats that I play from :) ).

I have bought two boats that were uscg documented in other states. It was zero issue to register them in indiana and get a title and no uscg documents. Had a friend buy a formula from mo and it was way more work to try and keep it documentsled than just get a title for indiana And do it the normal registration way.

Two issues and for the most part you can let it laps. Then you can try to get a title to it from a state but wonder if you won't run into an issue. Once documented the state title is no longer valid. If later a title is provided by another state is it actually valid. As example, in KY if the title can not be determined where or who has it, one must certify that they have had the boat for at least 7 years. This 7 years can be signed off by different individuals.

If later its determined to be falsified (intentionally) there is an issue.

Mine is documented and the only issue is I have to fill out a paper every year stating what I think its current value is. The paper is used to pay property taxes. The taxes are only slightly less then if it was just registered. Several years back KY use to be tax on documented boats, by the Fire Chief in Anchorage KY changed all that

Just the opposite, there is no state sales tax on it if you USCG document a boat owned in Missouri, but you are still required to have a state registration sticker if you use the boat more than 30 consecutive days on Missouri waterways. And to get the state registration sticker you have to show that you paid the personal property tax on it.

Some boat mortgage lenders require USCG documentation.
