Wow. You just sent a chill down my back. Had something similar and know how you feel. I don't night boat either.

The larger problem with episodes like this is that they typically happen when others that may not share their enthusiasm for risk-taking adrenaline rushes are present in droves. Way back in the old days, the country was far less populated than it is now, both on the highways and on the water. We all want what we all want and like to do what we all want to do. But as the population increases, we need to seriously consider the risks to others.

In this case, it didn't involve others. But it easily could have. I was out in the boat one gorgeous evening. Moonlit, calm waters, gorgeous. Just like I had dreamed of from boating nights in the 70's and 80's. I love the lake at night, always have. We were cruising back from dinner, going about 20 mph, bow down so I could see ahead. I was the only one that didn't drink that night, I was the captain. A boat came by us Starboard through a fairly narrow pass at what I'd estimate to be at least 80 mph. I felt his spray when he hit our wake. He was so close my knees shook.

I knew he had most likely came from the very same place we had just left some 30 minutes before, likely drunk. The boat was probably 15' or more longer than mine, so any impact would have been fatal for all six in my boat. I sold the boat, and have not been on the water since. With the fear of boating at night, I had no reason to continue

Hey Steve, Good post, points well taken. Should have hunted him down and beat the snot out of him, instead of giving up something you really love!

I'm struggling to recall any deaths from fast Vs. I know someone got hurt bad on razz. And that a number of step boats have spun (due to the CP being moved ahead of the CG)

Also your other two involved 2 key factors and neither are jumping a boats wake (like what originally sparked his comment.) Both hit a sea wall during a time of poor visibility and with booze or drugs involved.

I think his point was more geared to a situation of wake and heavy traffic. Which I am sure there has been a few but it seems to be far less than high powered cats.

The closest thing would be the world renowned 38' Fountain at LOTO. Didn't hit anything but each other flying around in the cockpit from what appears to be caused from speed and waves....and....stupidity.

As said before smoke on the water poker run. Someone in a OL turned hard and rolled if I remember.

Years ago Powerboat magazine had an amazing photo of a vee hull race boat that went nose first into a wave or wake or swell and went completely under water, probably still being propelled for a moment or two. It was a photo taken from a helicopter directly overhead.

That was a Tom Newby photo of the Ettore raceboat stuffing during the SBI Key West Worlds. The driver and co-pilot survived with relatively minor injures.

say what you like , Fiore God speed and all the other pros were likely not totally completely drunk and high / drunk and HIGH is a whole nother issue vs THE FLYING WINGS

Wobble 04-17-2017 02:21 PM

Talking of stuffs, Ms Geico filmed the Stihl boat going through a wave in a series of stills. Cant find them any more but they were awesome pics

The real difference is there is very few V's running 120+ and alot of Cats running 120+
There are no production V's running 165+ and several production 165+ cats

Our Canadian rates are higher for a Cat over a V-Bottom that run the same speed by a lot.

Well there were other reasons of course, but that was the one that firmed up the decision. Besides needing a much bigger boat, and not really having the passion to use for our very short season. Night boating was always a passion of mine. Being small and old, I'm not likely to chase anyone down without having a heart attack LOL

Besides, that boat was likely docked and emptying the fridge by the time I had gone another mile. My passengers were happy I slowed to a crawl so they could ask me WTF!!!!!!!! WTFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!

One woman screamed (I couldn't hear her), as she saw my stern light illuminate this large hull out of the water and spraying her face.

Obviously this sort of thing happens with boats of all kinds, not just big fast ones. People know how a lot of pontoon boaters drive, need I say more?

I agree with bripar77 and 99% of the time the wrecks could be prevented. It is called appropriate driving for the conditions. When the cruisers and other boats are out don't drive at 150 mph or whatever speed you boat becomes unstable. Under some conditions the safe oporating speed maybe be less than 100mph.

I don't drive the same on wet, snowy or crowded roads as when the conditions are better.

Mike Fire didn't die from the crash but rather complications after the surgery. He survived the wreck wearing safety equipment.

The 4 at Lanier didn't have life vests on. Driving to fast for the conditions.

I don't blame the boats. It comes down to either operator error or pushing the boat to the edge of its limits in a contest.

SABER28 05-07-2017 09:29 PM

i have never been there, is there a speed limit?
