Can anyone tell me the deal on this 38 PP. Is it one that was built from the original owner Dan..and resurrected...or was it built by someone else that bought the molds...sorry been out of the performance scene for years. Thanks Jeff

Bullhead 04-09-2017 03:43 PM

Don't know anything about the boat.....but glad to see you back

Hope all is well, good to see you looking at boats.

Pwraddr 04-09-2017 07:49 PM

Messaged my friend, he will probably chime in soon.

cowisl 04-09-2017 07:57 PM

Built by dan. Think it was the last one. It's very clean. Saw it last week. Let me know what else you would like to know. Chris

Dean Ferry 04-10-2017 06:43 AM

Jass, welcome back man, good luck with this possible buy.

flatlanderbill 04-10-2017 06:57 AM

Wow , nice boat! Anyone know what the asking price is? Just curious , not in the market , I'll be running the lightning for a while yet.

Sharp boats!
Shame somebody didn't get the molds that wanted to keep building a few...

Well a Sunsation F4 is *kinda* like a 38PP

I'm high-jacking here.....sorry but I'm starting to "itch" for another go-fast again too.

What about this 38. I love the paint but have never been on a Powerplay. Why hasn't this boat sold?

Powerplays are HUGE boats for 38. I could classify them as a "38' Black Thunder". It would tower over your former 382 Formula. Accordingly, I feel like they can really benefit from a "really built" XR drive or upgraded derivative (SCX/BMAX/etc.) to be solidly reliable long term.

Sydwayz 04-10-2017 11:32 AM

There is a ton of good info on this thread:

I too will back that up. They are HUGE but also not the fastest either. Amazing in rough water. I went out with Steve on the black one on the Chicago Poker run like 10 + yrs ago and only 2 other boats besides us went out. A/c and all lolhttp://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/...psuffcnqjd.jpg

That was my buddy's boat new and I posted it on OSO as he was going to trade it, Steve showed up the next day with the F650 and a myco and took her home!

The price is high and it has old Cobra power.........these are outstanding boats but the black one sold when it was 5 years old with 525s and brand new XR's for about 150K. Fastboats gave a trade number on the black boat of 125K and it was being traded at a Marine Max for a diesel cruiser which meant the owner would net about 133 including the sales tax. OSO Steve bought it the next day before the owner could trade it. Boat had 400+ hours on it and about 10,000 nautical miles on the GPS.

Black boat ran 84 as a best top speed with 525/XR's and yes it would eat drives occasionally but honestly the headers were far worse of a problem. The new XR's were replaced as the old ones got stolen from a repair shop.

F4 seems to be a faster hull but it chine walked a little at top speed, the Powerplay was rock solid but keep in mind it was almost 20 mph slower (400 less HP) than the Powerplay I drove. The PP has an old school feel to it, everything was square, look like the gauges were installed with a hole saw in a flat dash. The F4 was something out of Star Trek by comparison with a ton of CNC parts.

F-4 is a 5-step hull vs.2 on the PP plus some other changes to the bottom. I never experienced any chine-walk in the F-4. Don't remember Teague making any mention of it either in his review. The only recognizable carryover from the PP to the F-4 is the cabin liner. Otherwise you would never know the F-4 buck started as a 38 PP hull/deck.

cowisl 04-10-2017 01:36 PM

The boat at fast boats isn't as clean as temper tantrum. Still a great looking boat though!

We ran the crap all of it out of Port Everglades, kept at the OSO office on State Road 84 and than headed to Maryland to his brother's house.

? There's pics in the PP section in a thread accounting for all 38s.

Sure looks like 2' added behind the steps plus a 3' swim platform.

Mentalpause still has pics from the build of the buck. The build used to be documented on Sunsation's website before it's demise. Hull sides were cut out and swapped side to side, the hull cut in half and lengthened, a 32 SS nose was grafted on to the front, additional steps added, integrated swim platform added, new fairing, dash pods built, 3 piece interior liner made into a single mold, etc., etc., etc. When the boat was first discussed eons ago, it was supposed to be a 36. Then it grew to a 38 or 39. Then the PP was brought into the picture. Then dealer input grew it even further. The first boat was supposed to be a 525/XR boat. It quickly outgrew that combo.

JMS322 04-10-2017 02:40 PM

See this thread for the complete list of 38's and a pic of the first F4 http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/p...owerplays.html

The 2 steps that do anything are the same as the Powerplay. The other bow steps really do nothing at speed (they are not even in the water!).

I rode in the factory F4 boat and was aboard when they shot the cover for the brochure. At speed it would rock back and forth noticeably. I did 1/2 that poker run on a 43 NT which rode like a Cadillac and then came back on the F4. The chine walk was very noticeable on the F4 but that was the factory boat and might have been tweaked more than others. As I remember it ran about 104 when new whereas the other boats were 99-100.

Jupiter Sunsation 04-10-2017 02:49 PM

at 1:40-1:41 you can see the back and forth even on dead flat water. It may get more pronounced at higher speeds or with the NXT drive vs. bravos.

cowisl 04-10-2017 03:35 PM

Lets get this back on track...the Powerplay has absolutely no chine walk at any speed. It also tracks extremely well.

Yep, these bring back memories. It was right around 2005, when Dan built that boat, that we swiped the check to him to build the parts for Sunsation for building the F4 plug.

Mentalpause 04-10-2017 03:52 PM

The additional steps were added to the F4 bottom after Wayne decided to lengthen the boat. He reduced the size of the PP steps and added some smaller steps that were just under an inch each.

TBAG 04-10-2017 05:51 PM

Still amazes me people would ruin such a great boat with a cartoon character and silly lettering to go with it!

I'm not a painter and just curious but what would it cost to "fix" this boat and totally remove the cartoon character?

Yes... The dash was way to simple & would need redesigned if someone built a few!

That's why Wayne paid for that bottom to start the work on the F4. He knew Dan had an awesome bottom. No F4 I was ever in experienced chine walk, doesn't mean it never happened.. I was on that run where at 1:40 it slightly rocks. It was not chine walk. Matter of fact I was driving the boat that made the wake that caused that rock. We were shooting both boats at 8am in the morning on LOTO and at times Wayne and I were parallel and close enough for the helicopter to get both boats in the shoot, but just far enough away not to intermix the video.

Jup, I'm not referring to the Laminar Flow Interrupters at the bow. Wayne added additional, smaller steps to the running surface. I spent many hours in the first F-4. Never a hint of chine walk.

Knot 4 Me 04-11-2017 07:32 AM

It would be great if the 38 PP was to come back for Dan and his old crew to build them. Dan may not have been the best business man but he could build one he!! of a boat and was a perfectionist. Even though he knew the hull and deck he built for Wayne was going to get butchered, the hull and deck were laid up like any other of the boats he built. No shortcuts taken. I remember holding one of the chunks of the side of the hull you see missing in the pics above. Foam-cored perfection. Built like a brick sh!thouse.

MonkeySea2 04-11-2017 08:49 AM

cool thread. I love to learn about the history of the boats and manufacturers
