So you are answering your own question? Or is this a back door attempt to bash IMCO?
You lost 20mph or someone else?...either way I have a real tough time believing that, need to see the slip numbers to know wtf is going on. Also if props or gear ratio changed.
If power isnt too over the top the SCX upper can be used with the SC lower, lowers are a little more expendable than uppers.

The SCX is an absolutely fantastic drive. We have sold and installed more of them then any other drive. I have customers making near 1200 hp with them. They drive it like a rental and have not had 1 issue with the drives. The 1 and only drawback to the SCX, besides the price, is the loss of speed. I guess some guys just can't accept the loss of speed trade off for strength. We will generally use an SCX upper and SC lower for anything under 1000 hp, unless the customer wants to run #6 props. In that case, we'll use the SCX -4. Over 1000 hp gets an SCX upper and lower. The old SCX lowers were huge. The combo of upper and lower have cost some guys as much as 10 mph or more. I've seen 15 mph losses by just bolting it on. Some of that can be gained back with testing props and/or spacers. On average, we have seen around 5 mph loss with the SCX upper. However, I've yet to have a customer complain about that speed loss when they are boating instead of swapping XR's.

hard to justify either end - longevity and possible a 12 mph loss or breaking drives more times than not -- both sound painful . Personally just thinking out loud. One then would have to question --- why build a 900 hp engine to bring it back down persay to a 650 / 700 hp engine speed wise. The cost going from a 650 to a 900 hp is like double in price. So you spend huge amounts on a engine to go fast but in reality its like building an engine with 30 % to 50 % less hp because of the speed loss from a scx anchor / parachute behind the boat. Just build the 650 engine and stick the bravo XR on it ---- prob going to be real close in speed compared to a 800 to 900 hp engine mated with the scx upper and lower. . What I hear is on my 29 expect 10 mph loss with a full SCX - words I really did not want to hear.

This! I just lost 6 weeks of boating this season due to the Bravo Blues.
