A few weeks ago e got a 1979 Granada V-1750. New Page 1 ours is gold with original interior. We've had it in the shop getting a thorough once over. The mechanic just let us know he hears a knock in the engine. I'm feeling suspicious since he's had it for a full week and gave us a brief diagnosis on friday of a few minor's things. Now today he's basically saying our engine is totaled.
Is that normal???
Does it take that long to find a rod knock in the engine? We're not rich people and will most likely be forced to sell her now. Any suggestions would be wonderful, feeling pretty low right now.

Thanks for the responses...I do want to get a second opinion. We took it in for a once over right after we got her. My husband is now saying that they did mention the knock on friday but they were hoping it was nothing serious. Turns out it is. The part that I'm confused about, forgive my ignorance, I didn't know there was any engine knocking sound that wasn't serious.

Hi F2, i just googled darr'd..gee I hope you don't think I'm trying to screw anybody over, I just got this news a few minutes ago. Some forums are super strict about changing topics, that's why I started a new thread. Anyhow, as more of this unravels it seems that on Friday the mechanic did mention a knocking sound to my husband that he was hoping might just be bad gas, I guess by now he's determined it's not just the gas. But man oh man, I'm crushed at the moment. Should we be looking into a Mercruiser rebuild, I hear those aren't too expensive.

Hi all, can anyone recommend an OSO trusted mechanic to possibly replace an engine in the portland, Oregon area? We've located one at a 390(?) salvage yard for $1500 and it's testable, we'd just like to hire a mechanic to go through it at the yard before we consider this purchase. Thank you!
