Iconic Marine Group brings back Reggie Fountain

Iconic Marine Group brings back Reggie Fountain-fountain0802.jpgIconic Marine Group is focusing on outboard-powered boats over 30 feet in its Fountain, Donzi and Baja brands. Shown is the 38-foot Fountain center console, which was new for model year 2017.

Iconic Marine Group, which purchased the Fountain, Donzi, Baja and Pro-Line boat brands last year, is bringing Fountain founder Reggie Fountain back on board and is set to release several new models at upcoming boat shows.

“There’s some very familiar names over the last 100 years that have changed the business, and Reggie’s one of them, especially when it comes to performance,” Iconic Marine Group COO Joe Curran told Trade Only Today.

“He’s definitely energized with this project. He’s going to have everything to do with performance and building a performance team around that [Fountain] brand, and so we’ll see how it develops.”

Reggie Fountain will be working internally on some projects that will be announced going forward, Curran said. “It’s going to bring back some of the Fountain enthusiasts; he’s definitely going to be a statesman of the brand. Make no bones about it, Reggie’s there to work with ownership and management of the company and be part of the team. I’ve gotten to know him quite a bit in the last six months, and he’s a good man with a lot left in the tank.”

Iconic Marine Group was formed in May of 2016, when it quietly purchased the brands, making the announcement in August. The brands had changed hands, sometimes contentiously and out of bankruptcy, several times in the decade preceding the purchase.

One of the partners in the Iconic Marine Group bought out the shares of Pro-Line in December.

“We’ve been busy rebuilding this company in the last year,” Curran said. “We’ve built a pretty good foundation this year to move forward.”

Last September the company began focusing on the Fountain brand and its saltwater fishing boats.

“We got our production levels up starting in January … on the 38 and 34 Fountains,” Curran said. “We’re really focused on the saltwater market. The saltwater fish boat market is growing, as you know, particularly from 32 to 42 feet. We’ve put together a design team internally and have had a full-blown design and engineering team” since January.

“You’re hearing me go to bigger boats, 30 feet and up, and that’s going to be our focus for the next few years” across the brands, Curran said.

The company plans to introduce a new 39 Fountain as early as the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which will be completely new from top to bottom, Curran said. It is also adding two 42-footers to the schedule — one geared more toward offshore fishing and the other slated to be a little more geared to the recreational side, Curran said.

“There is more product coming literally every quarter that we’ve got in the pipeline — saltwater fish, all outboard-powered,” Curran said. “Our backlog is comfortably at 60 to 70 days on the bigger product. Basically we’ve been able to turn everything around in eight months.”

The company has gained 15 dealers in key markets during the past year, Curran said, and has refitted the whole plant in Washington, N.C., to build larger boats.

“When you look at our plant capabilities and skill levels of our people, I think it’s dramatically changed in the last six to eight months and we’ve definitely got our processes in line at this point. We’ve been busy this year,” Curran said.

The Donzi brand will introduce a 38-foot recreational sportboat at the Miami International Boat Show in February, focusing on outboard propulsion rather than sterndrive, Curran said. It will follow that up with a 36-foot model.

Baja has been building 23-foot and 26-foot Outlaws, and is starting production on a 35-foot Outlaw as well, Curran said.

“We’re doing what we say we’re going to do. The investment in the company is worthwhile and the outcome looks bright,” Curran said. “With the dealer network coming on board that we already have and where we’re going, we will probably expand international sales within the next 12 months. What I’m finding out is that the following of these brands internationally is really strong.”

Will be interesting to see the new Fountain offerings. Hopefully whomever has been overseeing the Baja line has been fired! Talk about screwing up an iconic entry level brand.

Very cool.

Great market to be in. We sell Invisible here and can barely keep them on the lot. Sold out 33 in 2 months, the 36 in 3 weeks, the 39 in 1 week, and our 42 is on order with a deposit on it already. Crazy how fast these big dog fishing boats sell.

1. Guy is a legend with more trophies than all other brands combined
2. I would bet he sold more performance boats than all other brands combined (Baja may be a close 2nd place)
3. He got deep in debt with Mercury (hey their stuff is expensive!).
4. Absolutely no harm in bringing this guy back for new ideas, renewing old connections, boat show hand shaking......whatever.
5. Recycling Trump's line: Make America Great Again.........Reggie could make performance boating great again!

Great news! I currently own a 2008 Fountain 35 Lightning. The engineering in this hull is second to none. They ride great, there stable, handle rough water. Just a remarkable drive. Ohh and Fast! Great move by iconic to bring back Reggie.

I really, truly and honestly hope I'm wrong but it just sounds like new vinyl and dash on their CC's with a side order of lip service.
