Reggie Fountain Talks Kilo Record, Returning to the Brand and More

What boat? As we know talk is cheap, and rumors are what PR is all about. Mr. Fountain is able and willing, but will it actually come to fruition? As I wrote prior, a one off kilo record run craft does not guarantee new product development, and as other folks have pointed out, it may all be CC focused.

The record shouldn't be hard to break with a pair of quad cam 1750s but who can afford a half million $ in engines alone? The record will be broken and the boat will be dismantled because no one will buy it ...

Always cheaper to have a client with deep pockets pursue a record run... factory can offer full support without footing the bill 100% for a day's + worth of glory.
With Fountain's start-up issues in the past 5 years getting back into a serviceable production run boat line - the money is definitely better spent to updating their offerings and supporting/attracting new clientele.

I agree with your whole assessment but two things should be mentioned: 1. Values have climbed but few factor in the costs to make those boats a premium value (refreshed power, paint/interior touch ups, new electronics/stereo etc). 2. Supply and Demand applies to buyers also (there is a shortage of buyers for new performance I/O boats and a shortage of first time I/O buyers that will fuel the demand for the future).
If a 2002 TS TG sells for 125K then everyone thinks it is a steal. If the same model sells for 175K then they will say the market is rising. However if that 125K boat needs 75K in work to make it "premium" then it sells for 175K then the reality is the seller would have been better off taking the lower 125K sale price and keep the upgrade money in his pocket. Using TG's because you mentioned one in your comment. The "values" argument can be applied to any brand but brands like Fountain/Baja have way more used inventory out there so values can vary greatly simply due to the volume of used inventory.
Last year there were two 02 TS TG's that sold cheap (575 power, missing drives, one had a terrible yellow interior). One of them was fixed up and relisted on OSO but I don't think there was much profit left over after getting the boat running again.

Is there any indication that Mr. Fountain will personally invest in this record breaking attempt? I don't think the bragging rights are worth the commitment of his own capital, but there is that ego thing!
