If you watch the video you see that they dragged the boat sideways up a ramp to separate the two boats. This probably broke the skeg off.

I think we've all made the decision to forego life vests on hot days and take the risk. Clipping the lanyard to yourself is no inconvenience at all and there is no excuse not to do it.
